Coast to Coast Wristband

The day started out at about 70 degrees and almost 80% humidity and I could feel it as soon as I stepped outside.  Today I would be starting in the last corral and there were already quite a few people in the corral so I wasn't right up front, but close enough.

The corrals were more organized than last year and there wasn't the same confusion since the 5K was the day before this time, but it was soon clear that the corrals were way to small again.  I was curious if they would handle it better this year.  Last year they let all the people cut in front of those of us that were in the corral and had been waiting for a very long time.

An Elvis impersonator sang the National Anthem today and I have to say that it was my absolute least favorite rendition of the National Anthem ever.  For me it was absolutely horrible and I hope they never do that again.

Disneyland 10K Start Line

Once the wheelchairs and corrals A and B left we were able to start moving forward.  The overflow was handled much better this year.  They held the overflow until the people that were in the corrals were ahead of them.  We kept moving until corral C was off.

Right off the start line someone fell and other runners were calling for medics and urging people to go around the fallen runner.  The fallen runner wasn't getting up so I don't imagine that is a good thing and I just hope she will be okay.  When something like that happens you have to wonder if the overcrowding of the start line played a part in the runner falling.

I stuck to a five minute walk 1 minute run routine.  I was feeling okay as we headed in to convention center area and I watched another lady take a tumble - she popped back up and kept going and there were medics there, but she said she was okay.  I asked her how she was as I came up to her and she said she was okay, just surprised.

Back on the road and headed toward the parks.  I was feeling a bit concerned about time because I felt really slow.  Finally we were headed in to Cars Land and then on to Paradise Pier.  I just kept doing my thing and I was passing Grizzly River Run and past Soarin' and the mile three marker.

At three miles I heard that I was three minutes ahead of pace.  That didn't seem like very much and I was starting to feel tired already.  Out of California Adventure and across the way to Disneyland.  The course didn't feel overly crowded by this point so that was a nice surprise.

As I hit Main Street I just soaked in the atmosphere as I always enjoy that part of the races.  Then at the end of Main Street there was another runner face down and surrounded by medics.  Yikes, that seems like a lot of injuries for a 10K.

Walking right down the middle of Main Street USA (again)

On to Tomorrowland and mile four.  Around back and back through Fantasyland and then through the Castle.  Yeah, we get to go through the Castle.  Just past mile five now and I am truly feeling spent.  The humidity was really taking a toll on me and I started to just feel not so good, but I kept plugging on.

Coming in to the final stretch

Now we're back stage and then that darn hill to get back in to Downtown Disney.  Finally here came mile six and I know I'm almost done.  At the finish line I was able to high five Mickey and then Donald left me hanging - darn duck.

I got my medal and then my 10K finisher wristband for the Dumbo Challenge.  I grabbed two Powerade bottles and a water.  Got in line for a quick finisher's photo and then headed over to grab a snack box.  Then I headed out.

Some notable costumes on the course - two guys dressed as Chip and Dale in full fur suits, two ladies dressed as Dole Whips.  The best - Kronk with Yzma in her tent on his shoulders. Seriously look at the photos on runDisney's site and you'll find a picture of him - it was truly impressive and one of the best costumes I've ever seen!

This race proved to be my undoing.  I was not feeling well at all after the race and on top of that my left heel was hurting so badly that it was tough to walk.  I held out hope that I'd be able to do the half the next day...finally at 2:30am I had to face the fact that I wasn't going to be able to do the half, I wasn't even sure I could have walked to the staging area.  That was when I decided to skip the half.  This was the beginning of a battle that will plague me for races to come...More on that in future posts.
