2014 Walt Disney World Marathon Expo

Since I'm doing the Dopey Challenge this year I needed to go to the expo on the first day.  The expo was scheduled to open at 10am and I decided to get there early so that I could get in line and get the things I wanted.

I arrived at ESPN Wide World of Sports at 9:15am and I headed up to the HP Field House and was surprised because it was already open.  I realized on my way that I had all my receipts, but not my waiver.  A quick stop at the waiver printing station and I had my waiver printed and signed.

It was relatively empty since they opened early so I headed to the Official Merchandise area first.  I did some shopping and there were no lines so it was so fast for a change.  It was fantastic.

Next I went over to pick up my Dopey Challenge Bibs.  Again, there was no one there so I walked right up.  I got both bibs and then a card for my commemorative items.  I was happy this time because they didn't hand me a bunch of pins that I didn't have any place to carry, instead I was given a commemorative card like they used to do just for the necklaces.

I headed over to the commemorative items booth and handed them my card and it took a few minutes to find my items because they weren't alphabetized correctly.  I was so happy that everything was in one large envelope.  The volunteer took everything out and we went through each item to make sure nothing was missing and to my delight everything was there even though I ordered things at different times.  Very organized and easy for me for a change.

The Dopey Challenge shirt and gear bag pick up was in the same building (kind of) so I headed there next.  Again I had no line and got my shirts quick and easy  Now, I have to add a caveat here - 5 of the 6 shirts were picked up here.  The 5K shirt was not included in this gear bag.

In order to get the 5K shirt it was time to head over to the Josten's Center and the expo floor.  I headed in and right to the 5K shirt pick up area and walked right up and got my shirt.  Of course it wouldn't be Disney if you weren't funneled in to a gift shop or in this case the official merchandise area.  I was okay with that because I wanted to pick up a couple of things I didn't see in the first official merchandise area.  I grabbed the things I wanted and walked right up to a register, but the crowds were definitely getting thicker.

I walked the expo floor to see if there was anything else I wanted and I didn't find anything.  I broke down and pre-ordered a Dooney & Burke purse this time so I had to head over to Champion Stadium to pick that up.  There were lots of signs, but no real directions.  There was one line that started at one door, another line that started from the other door on the other side and nothing that said pre-orders.  I finally found them at a little table off to the side.  Thank goodness I had printed my receipt because I had to have it and a picture ID.  Then I was able to look through the bags and pick the one that I wanted.  I finally found one with the design I liked the best, signed for it and was all done.

The expo was getting more crowded now and the line for the runDisney New Balance shoes was all the way down the hill.  It was crazy busy.   There was a lot of shoes sold that day.  I headed to my car to drop off my stuff and I realized that I did all of that in about 45 minutes.

I headed back in to wait for some friends and caught a visualization speaker's series and as I was waiting for it to start I met Walt from one of the blogs I follow and we chatted for a few minutes.  I sat and watched the presentation and wondered why I wasn't hearing from any one that they had arrived.  At about 1pm I decided to head out and head home.

Once I got home I found that my text messages were hijacked by my iPad and that's why I didn't hear from any one on my phone.

Weekly Review: Jan 20 - 26, 2014

I have nothing to report for this week.  No weigh in since I was traveling.  No miles because I needed to rest and recover.  Bad eating because I need to go grocery shopping.

Next week I'll get back on track with the miles and try to do better with food too.

Weekly Review: Jan 13 - 19, 2014

Here's this week's recap
PM Workout: Treadmill walk 1.25mi @ 24:00 per mi
Notes: Pretty sore and tired today, but nothing intolerable.  My knees feel fine, the heels are holding up unless I touch them.  The worst part is the huge blisters on both feet.  Doesn't really matter, I am so proud of what I did over the weekend.  This was the right start to the year and it seems like it's been a long time coming.

PM Workout:  Bike 3.5mi, 14.2mph avg, resistance level 2
Notes:  Legs are really swollen and my feet are sore today.  Couldn't put a full time workout in as I had to drop the dogs at the kennel and pack for California.

Notes:  Travel to California so I took a rest day.  I felt lazy taking the day off, but it's the first day I've had no workout since July 1, 2013 so I cannot complain.

Notes:  Today was the Tinker Bell Expo and I spent the better part of the day standing in lines, walking the expo, and shopping.  Still feel lazy not working out, but I think saving my legs is the better option right now.

AM Workout: Neverland 5K - 4.2mi, .92mi warm up/cool down, 3.28mi @ 14:02 per mi Garmin, 3.1mi @ 14:50 per mi official distance
Notes:  Expected to be slow and tired today, but instead I felt great.  The weather was great, I enjoyed the course and it was fun starting off at the front of the whole race.  I also took two minutes off last week's 5K time so that felt good too.

AM Workout: Tinker Bell 10K - 7.05mi, .67mi warm up/cool down, 6.38mi @ 14:13 per mi Garmin, 6.2mi @ 14:38 per mi Chip Time
Notes: Such a fantastic race.  I felt good, I had fun and ended up with a new 10K PR.  Took three minutes off my previous 10K PR and seven minutes off last week's 10K time.

PM Workout: Tinker Bell Half Marathon - 14.27mi, .69mi warm up/cool down, 13.58mi @ 14:31 per mi Garmin, 13.1mi @ 15:03 per mi Chip Time
Notes:  Seriously, how can I be upset by this?  I took 21 minutes off last week's half time.  I did run/walk intervals the entire time.  I thought I hit a wall at mile eight, but I pushed through it and ended up stronger than I probably should have.  I really felt like this race shows me that I can do more again and I will improve.

Weight Watch: +0.2 pounds
Yes, I can come off a 50+ mile week and gain weight.  In this case, most of this was swelling and honestly, I'm not upset by this.

Training Notes
11 days - 7 races - 71 miles - 9 medals.  I can't express how proud I am of myself right now.  I took on a challenge last year and I accomplished it.  The three races this weekend were fantastic.  I ended up bettering my times for all three races - something I never would have thought possible after the Dopey Challenge. 

The best part is that I'm really feeling good mentally and physically.  I want to do more and get better and reach the rest of my goals for the year.  I have a lot of work left to do, but now it excites me and makes me start thinking about how to reach those goals.

Health Watch
I won't have a weigh in for this week because I will still be in California, but I anticipate that I will have a weight gain.  I know I have to get back on track here and I'll do what I can to do it

Weekly Review: Jan 6 - 12, 2014

PM Workout: Treadmill walk 1.75mi @ 17:08 per mi
Notes:  Rough day today - Belle had a bad seizure while I was at work and decided to destroy the blinds, then had another seizure while I was home at lunch, then chewed through the toilet water supply line and flooded the bathroom and part of the living room.  She is definitely stressing me out so after all the clean up this was all I was good for tonight.

PM Workout:  Treadmill run/walk 2.06mi @ 15:32 per mi
Notes:  Felt really good tonight.  Legs felt good all day.  I think I'm excited, ready, not ready and nervous for this weekend's races.  I want this year to start off so fantastic that I can't even imagine that it won't.

AM Workout:  Bike 7.9mi, 15.9mph avg, resistance level 3
Notes:  Good bike ride to get the day going.  Today's the expo and I'll be going to get my Dopey packet, commemorative items and who knows what else I'll find.  Super excited.

AM Workout: WDW Family Fun Run 5K - 3.41mi, .31mi warm up/cool down, 3.1mi @ 15:31 per mi chip time or 3.19mi @ 15:05 per mi Garmin
Notes:  One down three to go.  Did a 5min walk/1min run interval with Rae today during the 5K.  It was cool and drizzly and pretty awesome.  Kept it light and easy and fun today.  Had fun dressed as Pluto for the race.

AM Workout: WDW 10K - 7.2mi, 1mi warm up/cool down, 6.2mi @ 15:39 per mi Chip Time, 6.38mi @ 15:15 per mi Garmin
Notes:  Fun new course, super crowded first two miles on the road, but once it clears up it was a lot of fun.  My left heel was really sore during/after this one and the knees were feeling a bit sore.  Dressed up Minnie-esque and it was fun again.

AM Workout: WDW Half Marathon - 14.28mi, .89mi warm up/cool down, 13.1mi @ 16:39 per mi Chip Time, 13.39mi @ 16:18 per mi Garmin
Notes: Can't say that this was a great day - it was really tough.  I let things get in to my head and I couldn't get them out and that really caused me some issues.  This race should have just been fun and easy, but I made it harder on myself than I needed to.  My left heel was also really sore and painful and I ended up feeling a lot of blisters and hot spots on both feet.

PM Workout: WDW Full Marathon - 27.59mi, 26.2mi @ 16:24 per mi Chip Time
Notes:  My third and slowest full marathon.  I did it.  It wasn't always easy, but I made it work and I had an absolute blast while I whittled the miles down.  I am so proud and impressed that I was able to finish.  My mind played a big part in making this happen and I finished - that's the important part.

Not great, not horrible.  I'm trying to do better, but I decided that the races and having fun with friends and doing what I wanted was important this week.

Training Notes
I am officially Dopey - now I've been unofficially Dopey a couple of times, but now it's the real deal and I have the hardware to prove it.  4 days, 4 parks, 4 races - awesome!  I will do full reviews of the races, but I learned yet again how much mental fitness is important for these races and the effects it can have on things on the course.

Next week I have three more races and we'll see how this all goes!

I had good and bad days this week, but I'm not stressed about things because the races were my goal.

2013 Disneyland Half

After a night of little sleep, the alarms went off at 3am, but I was already awake and up.  The start of the day was a deja vu of the previous day's routine - get up, get going and get my gear on.  My right knee was a bit achy and sore this morning - along with the rest of me.

I put a wet washcloth in the freezer of the mini fridge the night before and I pried it out of the freezer and put it in my waist pack.  I ate my Powerbar and my stomach was a bit upset.  I was a bit worried that I might already be a bit low on hydration, but my stomach was not up to putting anything else in it.

At 3:50am I headed out and made my way toward the Disneyland Hotel.  It struck me as super funny because as I passed the parking lot the speakers were already informing me that I had to use caution because the course ahead narrows.  I met up with De'Dee and Pam as they finished getting ready to head out.

It seemed like we made it to the gathering area super quickly.  There were a ton of photographers around so we had our picture taken a couple of times as we made our way over so they could meet up with the All Ears running team.

It was about 4:45am when we finally headed to the corrals.  The walk today was much calmer and less crowded than yesterday for the 10K.  I said goodbye to De'Dee and Pam as we headed to our separate corrals.  I made it in to my corral and was able to get pretty close to the front, but I wasn't really worried about finishing today.  As I was waiting I received a couple of texts from friends and I appreciated the pep talk!  I also discovered that my phone was cold and a bit damp from the frozen washcloth so I rearranged things and my Lifesavers ended up next to the frozen cloth.

I wanted to be in the corral earlier today why?  There wasn't a lot of fun to be had in standing in the corral for over an hour, but that's the way it usually goes.  The corrals were super full again and not all the participants were able to fit again.  People were starting to get annoying as they pulled apart the fences to climb in as far up as they could.  Then they wonder why people are giving them dirty looks and make snide comments about people not being happy - gosh, I can't imagine.  Hello people, the race is chip timed.  If you want to be in the front of the corral get there earlier like the rest of us.  Of course, this was really a minor annoyance because when it was time to actually go the runDisney officials let all those people waiting off to the side right in the front of the corral - UGH!

Yesterday was the first runDisney race that I had worn headphones in and I found that I enjoyed it and it helped in the less exciting parts of the course so I did the same for this race. I wear just one headphone so I can still take in everything around me.

Finally we were off.  I'm feeling a bit stiff and sore, but I knew I would loosen up after a mile or two.  I decided then and there that I would be walking the start - I usually do anyway because it tends to be a bit crowded at the start and the first mile is on the streets.  Mile 1 was 15:20 and the legs were starting to warm up and I was feeling pretty good mentally.

As you turn the corner and head to the mile two marker, it is also the mile 12 marker and just past that mile 12 marker the leader run came through and he was flying!  It's so awesome to see the lead runners go by.  Mile 2 was 15:10.

As we head in to the parks there are a lot of crowds and it makes it a bit tougher, but I kept up an okay pace.  I thought about starting to run/walk at this point - Mile 3, but I just wasn't feeling it and it was already starting to feel hot.  My legs were feeling good at this point

Now we're through California Adventure and on the way to Disneyland.  Mile 3 was 14:49, which would be my fastest mile.  I so enjoyed going through Disneyland.  Through the Castle and Tomorrowland.  I'm using my water and grabbing water at each water stop.

Look, It's the Castle!!!!

We're out of Disneyland now.  Mile 4 was 15:49.  I've been doing one Lifesaver every mile like I always do and it's funny because they are cold from being next to my frozen washcloth.  It's sort of fun, but they are a bit hard to chew.

We're back on the streets now and I'm hot and that's when I decide that I won't be doing run/walk until at least mile 6.  Another water stop and I was so ready for it.  Mile 5 was 15:45.  Trudging along the streets in the blazing sun - hot, hot, hot.  More water and here comes mile 6.  To run/walk or just walk - just walk.  Mile 6 was 15:03.

Just one foot in front of the other - repeat.  Mile 7 was 15:23.  And now we have the classic cars - over 300 of them.  I love the cars and everyone with them is so nice.  I thank and/or greet all of them.  Some of them are so surprised when you do that.  It's a boost for me for sure.

Mile 8 was 14:53.  Here's the Honda Center.

It's So Hot, but I'm Out Here Trudging Along!

More awesome cars and then they are all gone and we're on the Santa Ana River Trail and the going is slow.  It's always crowded here and dirt so you have to be careful.  Thankfully it's not too long. Mile 9 was 15:32.

Here I go in to the Angel's Stadium parking lot.  I decide to take it slow and easy through the stadium and then maybe I'll have enough to kick it up for the last 5K.  The little hill down on to the field hurts my knees, but right in front of me I see Pam and De'Dee.  I caught up to them - they started in corral D and I was in F and I caught them.  Normally they are much faster than me, but they are being smart and taking it slow and easy in the heat.  We chatted for a few seconds and I continued on my way.

Back out of the stadium and around the parking lot.  More water and this time I grab two.  Mile 10 was 16:44.  My slowest mile.

I really want to run/walk, but my body says no it's just too hot.  My legs are tired, but my mind is okay, but I am at the wall.  Two more water.  It's not exciting at this point and I'm suffering.  Mile 11 was 15:10.  I feel like I'm walking through quicksand.  I know I'm getting close, but I am feeling every step.  I take note that I am still sweating, but I also notice that I'm getting chills every once in a while - not good.

Finally headed to mile 12.  Mile 12 was 15:17.  Mentally it's tough.  I've missed my goal time, I'm hurting, the legs are done.  I keep going.  It's so close now.  It's really close.

Here comes mile 13.  Mile 13 was 15:33.

The Final Stretch

I'm in the final stretch, my hands started swelling around mile 7 and I can barely close them now.  My Dumbo wristband which was loose is almost tight.  It doesn't matter - there's the finish line.  I am right there.

I get out my frozen towel and it feels so good to wipe off and cool down - the best decision I had made yet.  I noticed that I didn't get my finish text - oh no, did I not get a finish time?

I got in line to get my snack box and a banana and headed in to the reunion area.  I texted De'Dee to make sure they were both okay and they were done too.  I walked through Downtown Disney and cheered on a few of the last runners heading in to the finish line.  So many of them are emotional - I totally get it.

Back in my room a little after 10am.  I ordered room service for breakfast, shower, ice bath, took some photos.  Food arrives and I ate, then I took a short nap.  The rest of the day I just took it easy around the room doing nothing exciting and I actually never left once I got back.  It took me a while to cool down after the race and I just didn't feel like going back out in the heat.
