November 2013 Wrap Up

Weight Watch: +.4 pounds
There's really nothing to say here.  It's just not on my mind right now to do better.  

Mileage Watch:
Run/Walk: 72.07 miles
Bike: 55.9 miles
Elliptical: 3.33 miles
Total Miles: 131.30 miles

Goal Review
So, I set a goal for November - continue miles every day.  Didn't matter how many miles as long as I got up and moved.

I am happy to say that I met this goal once again.  It wasn't always easy or pretty, but I do feel like the miles have made me stronger when I've really needed it.  It has also made me think about doing it every single day.

I have done my best to stick to the Galloway plan for Dopey.  I've done all my short runs, but I still tend to struggle with the long runs at times.  By the time the weekend rolls around I'm usually quite tired and wrung out and have trouble getting moving.  

December 2013
I intend to continue the miles every day goal in December.  It's the final push to January now and I need all the strength I can get.

I will continue to use the Galloway Dopey Training plan.  I am going to continue to try to make my run/walk segments last as long as I can in hopes to build a buffer on race days.  I will also work on getting the long miles done outside.

Notes:  Good hard bike ride tonight.  Knees clicking/popping but not painful so I'll need to watch that they don't get worse.

Notes:  Not feeling so great, really questioning my abilities right now.

PM Workout:  Elliptical 1.14mi, resistance level 3, ramp incline 10%
Notes:  Raised the resistance and felt pretty good.

Notes:  While it was a good hard run/walk I feel like I'm moving backward instead of forward.  Dealing with a lot of stress in my life right now too.

Notes:  Ran my entire miracle mile today which felt pretty good.  Couldn't get all my miles in tonight, just wasn't feeling it.

2013 Expedition Everest Challenge

The expo for the 2013 Expedition Everest Challenge was held at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.  If you've ever visited the other expos, this one is nothing like those.  This is a small expo.  There's bib pick-up, and bag/shirt pick-up.  Then there's a small official merchandise location and a few vendors.  They have some speakers and sessions to describe the course and the process for the 5K and the scavenger hunt - I recommend checking out one of these sessions if it is your first time doing this event.

This is an evening event so plan on arriving at Animal Kingdom before or around sunset and then waiting around for a bit.  Driving to the Animal Kingdom and parking is quick and easy and the race starts in the parking lot.  

As I walked around I noticed a lot of interesting costumes this year - including the guys dressed princesses - yes, one of them was dressed as Jasmine including the stomach baring top.  Lots of people were taking their pictures with these guys.  Too funny!

I took some pictures for people as I walked to my corral.  I knew I was going to be slow so I headed to my corral.  It was a very warm and humid evening and I was already sweating as I stood around and waited.  All of a sudden something hit my hair - I thought it was just someone passing behind me - then it happened again and I turned around.  The guy behind me said - sorry, there was a bug.  So I thanked him for getting rid of it.  That was very funny and nice of him.

There was a brief announcement about the Boston Marathon events and a moment of silence.  It was very tactfully done.  Then we had a sing along version of the National Anthem with trumpet accompaniment.  It was quite lovely.

2013 Expedition Everest Challenge Start Line

The start line was rather fun as they had the snow machines out and there was snow floating and fans blowing.  It really added a lot to the atmosphere.

Then it was time to go.  The beginning of the race is around the parking lot and not a lot of fun, but thankfully the boring part ends quickly as the first obstacle approaches.

The first obstacle is hay bales and if you look at the picture above you'll see in the background people on the ground.  Right as I was going over the first hay bale the woman next to me went down hard on her elbow.  She was hurting.  Thankfully, the medics saw her and I stayed with her until they arrived just a minute or two later.  She was crying and crushed.  I am sure her arm was hurting pretty good, but I think maybe she was more shaken up and embarrassed than anything else.  It seems to me that the worst part of this race is that it is a 5K with obstacles.  I think many people assume that since it's a 5K they can go all out even if they don't train and it gets them in to trouble.  I've seen plenty of people go down on this course.

The medics arrived and I headed on my way.  

The second obstacle is tires and this year was a little different than last year.  Last year the tires were set up so that people that didn't want to chance falling could walk between the rows of tires.  This year there was no way to get around the tires so you were stuck going through them.  It was a bit dark and there were way more tires this time.  I managed to get through them without killing myself.

I was having a rough time with this one because I was pretty sick.  It was about a week before I had surgery and was a bit rough, but I managed.

I met a very inspirational man after the tires and we chatted through most of the back part of Animal Kingdom.  He had his Achilles' rebuilt earlier in the year and this was a goal race for him in his recovery.  He was doing a great job and I hope I was able to give him a bit of a boost for the last part of the race.

The third obstacle came right after mile 3 and was the army crawl under netting.  Last year I got down and did this, but this year there was no way I was going to be able to crawl on my stomach so I went around this time.

Once you get through the 5K you get a penlight and your first clue card and head back in to the park.  I have to say that I wasn't completely in to the scavenger hunt this year.  I felt that the clues were a bit tough or my mind just wasn't in to riddling things out.  I worked with other participants, listened to others or just flat out asked volunteers for help.  I just really wanted to be done.

I managed to get through and get my medal so I was happy.

Apparently, runDisney after parties and I just can't seem to get together.  As soon as I got my medal, I headed straight to my car and headed for home.  I didn't even make it back in to the park.

I still like this event.  It's fun and different.  One thing I noticed this year is that it wasn't quite as fun as last year because they did the family scavenger hunt in the morning at ESPN Wide World of Sports which meant there weren't as many families on the course during the evening event.  One of the things I loved last year was watching the excitement all of the kids had during the event.  Still, whether you do this event as an individual or a team it is a fun event and I do recommend everyone try it at least once.

Weekly Review: Nov 11 - 17, 2013

Notes:  Still a bit sore and achy today, but the walk was good to keep me moving.

Notes:  Well the legs are still feeling the races a bit so I kept it slow and easy tonight.

Notes:  Kept the incline at 2.5% tonight, but I was just feeling off and tired so nothing fancy tonight.

Notes:  Still not feeling great today.  Legs are still worn out and my stomach isn't feeling great.  Despite that, I got a good run in.

Notes:  Oddly, the elliptical felt good and comfortable tonight.  That probably means I need to make it harder for myself to keep challenging my muscles.  Can't say I'm feeling much better today and I'm very tired.

Notes: Belle had a mini seizure this afternoon and I've been sick all day.  Should have been a six miler today, but that just wasn't going to happen.

Notes:  Still just not feeling great today and I'm hoping this passes soon as I don't have time to be sick right now.  Just a quick, quiet walk on the treadmill to get some movement and distance in.  Certainly nothing fancy or all that great.

Training Notes
This has been a rough week for me.  I was pretty sore from the races last week so I didn't have much in me during the first part of the week.  Then I started just feeling very run down and drained the rest of the week so mileage was light and easy and not great this week.

I will have to re-focus this next week and get some momentum back.  The next back to back to back to back long weekend is coming up and I need to be ready to go and do what I can do.

I need to stop stuffing bad stuff in my body too.  I've been eating very badly and I know I need to do better in this area.

Notes:  I am so sore that I can barely move.  Feeling pain in pretty much every part of my body right now.  Yesterday took a toll I didn't expect..

Training Notes
I am absolutely thrilled with my performance in the 5K.  At least in short distances I am starting to gain a little bit of speed.  I had an absolutely fantastic time at the 5K and really enjoyed myself the whole time.  I felt really good after it as well.

Then it was time for the half marathon and I was thinking it was going to go well considering how the morning went.  I am very happy that I was able to do run/walk the whole time, but I'm sad that my speed was so bad.  In addition, I am completely upset with the fact that I am so sore today that I can hardly move.

Food has been hit and miss all week again.  I've had really good days and really bad days.  I know I need to keep working on this.

2013 Princess Half Marathon - 5th Anniversary

As I mentioned in my post on the 2013 Mickey and Minnie Mouse Royal Family 5K, I picked up my packet on Friday afternoon and it wasn't the best experience.  Well, at least the packet pick up wasn't so bad, just the rest of it wasn't great.  I will still be happy to be back over at ESPN Wide World of Sports for this Expo next year.

It's a great thing that we can now order a women's or men's cut shirt.  For me, the women's champion shirts have always run small (even when I wasn't as heavy as I am now) and I don't like shirts to cling so I always opt for the men's shirt now.

There was some extras for the fifth anniversary and I appreciated the little extras.

I drove to Epcot to park in the early hours of the morning.  As I entered the staging area and went about my normal pre-corral routine I noticed that it was already quite warm and very humid.  This of course made me nervous as I don't do so well with the humidity.  I could only hope for the best and do what I could since I was still not at 100% in terms of my health and I really just wanted to finish upright.

The race got under way and soon it was light.  Thankfully, there was a nice cloud cover so the sun wasn't blaring down on us, but it was definitely warm and the humidity never did ease during the entire race.

This race course is the same as the WDW Half in January.  There's some road time with some special character spots prior to the Ticket and Transportation Center - there's a group of princes all together for a photo op that I always love as it's amazing to see them all together in one place like that, then you get the Contemporary hill and on to the Magic Kingdom which is always fun and energizing.  After the Magic Kingdom it's the crowded road by the Grand Floridian and Polynesian, some more lovely road with banked ramps an overpass, the Epcot parking lot and then in to Epcot where the end is near and the smiles come easily.  Finally you exit Epcot and head to the finish line where hopefully you get to high five one of the fab five!

If you're looking for a great race for a girls' weekend, this is a must try.  The atmosphere is fun and there is a lot of energy on the course.  You'll see plenty of running skirts and tutus and glitter.  That doesn't mean that men should avoid this race, as someone once told me there's plenty to look at and who knows you might see something you like and set a new PR.  Beware men, you're not going to be in a corral above C in this race and if you're looking for an award other than your finisher's medal this race isn't for you.

In all seriousness, this is one of my favorite runDisney events and I highly recommend it!

2013 Mickey and Minnie Mouse Royal Family 5K Fun Run

The Princess Half Marathon Expo took place at the Coronado Springs Convention Center.  This was a huge mistake.  The first problem was having to bus from Downtown Disney to Coronado Springs because there isn't enough parking at Coronado Springs.  The next problem was the very small and cramped area they tried to put everything in.  It just felt very disorganized and underwhelming.

Still, I was able to get my bibs and packets pretty quickly and without too much fuss.  After I picked everything up I went in search of the timing mat to check to make sure my bib was correct and worked.  If you've followed me for any length of time you might recall that I've had some issues with bibs not working correctly, not just at Disney, but at other events.  I guess I'm a little bit skeptical that they will always work.  I walked the whole area and couldn't find the timing mat so I stopped by the runDisney booth and asked about it.  The Cast Member I spoke to didn't know if there was one set up and directed me to check with Runner Relations.

I head to the back corner and get in line to ask about the timing mat.  After waiting a few minutes I finally get to ask the Cast Member if there is a timing mat set up to verify the information and to see if the tag is functional.  The Cast Member was really very rude and patronizing and sort of rolled her eyes as she looked at me and said, "There's no reason to check these tags, they always work and the information is never wrong."  I explained that I've had a few races where that hasn't been the case so I'd just like to make sure everything is working and correct.  I was then told, "we're not going to do this any more and there's no reason to doubt that it will work."  Now, as you read this you're probably thinking that doesn't sound unreasonable or rude or patronizing, but I cannot type the attitude that I received from this Cast Member - she acted like a snotty teenager that feels she is way better than every one else she speaks to.  

At this point I asked to speak to a manager.  It just so happened that there was a manager and I stepped over to speak to him.  I explained my question and before I could even finish I was informed that if there was a problem with my bib then I must have bent it or did something wrong.  I explained that after 80+ races I was well aware of how to take care of and wear a bib and that technology isn't flawless, but I would appreciate it if he would backup for just one second.  I then explained that I understood his stand on not having the timing mat, but what I really wanted to discuss was the manner in which I was just treated by his Cast Member.  He sort of huffed and said fine.  I explained the situation and I again got the rolling eye treatment.  It was just very disheartening so I finally asked if there was someone that I could speak to regarding this situation and I was sent to the show event office.

I went to the show event office in the opposite corner of the space and guess what...There was no one there to speak to.  I waited about 15-20 minutes and never did find someone to speak to.  I left feeling very sad and disappointed at the way the afternoon progressed.  It makes you wonder about the value of the event when things like this happen.  Still, this isn't the norm and there are a lot of situations that might have caused this issue that I don't know about so I try to give people the benefit of the doubt.

The Mickey and Minnie Mouse Royal Family 5K took place Saturday at Epcot.  This is the same 5K course as January WDW Marathon Weekend 5K.  The course starts in the parking lot, goes backstage, in and around world showcase, to future world and back out to the parking lot.  

I drove to Epcot early in the morning and parking was painless and easy.  Then I headed to the staging area and grabbed a couple of quick photos and walked around to warm up a bit before getting in my corral to wait to go.

It was a warm humid morning, but not too bad overall in terms of weather.  I took off without any real goals for the race, but that quickly changed.  I am sure that I've mentioned Santa Claus in other race reports.  I have run with him in full marathons and half marathons and 5Ks and he always kicks my butt.  Yes, Santa is faster than me and he just plugs along like crazy.  Turns out that he was right in front of me pretty much from the start so I decided to use Santa as my pacer.  I stayed with him for a long time when I finally decided that I really needed to get in front of Santa and try to cross the finish line before him, just this once.

Yes, the announcer is calling out Santa Claus and you can't help but smile at the spectators calling out to Santa Claus and the announcers calling out Santa Claus as he gets closer to the finish line.

And the picture above is my proof that at least one time I was able to get in front of Santa Claus and cross the line before him.  Now, you may think that sounds horrible - trying to beat Santa Claus, but I promise it wasn't anything against Santa Claus, I just needed something to get me through the race more quickly.

After getting my drinks, I was headed to get my finisher photo and I was next to Santa Claus again and I did have a quick chat with him.  I thanked him for pacing me through the race.  Congratulated him on his finish not only today, but doing the Unofficial Dopey again this year and wished him luck with the half the next day.  He's really a very nice gentleman and I find a lot of inspiration in his spirit, perseverance, and amazing ability to continue to do these races.  I don't know how old he is, but I hope I can be doing these races well in to my older years.
