Being Swept

I received a comment asking what it means to be swept, so I thought I'd share a bit about sweeping during runDisney races.

If you do not maintain the 16 minute per mile pace you can be picked up on the course, not allowed to finish the race, and transported to the finish line.

While you have a set amount of time to complete a race, the timing doesn't actually start until the very last person crosses the start line. The longer races have what we call balloon ladies that are the pacers - they carry a balloon and you must be in front of them or you are behind pace and are in danger of being swept.

The 5K races are very lenient on the pace because they are oriented towards families and I don't know of anyone that has been swept during a 5K, but they do have the right to remove participants if they fall to far behind.

While I haven't been swept yet, I was very close during the Tower of Terror 10 Miler. I was quite ill during that race and was only 7 seconds ahead of the pacers. I had to fight to get to mile 9 where they stopped sweeping people.

That's the other thing, there is usually a point of the course where they will stop sweeping people as long as they are ahead of the pacers at that point. Then participants just have to keep moving and they will be allowed to finish. Usually for half marathons it's at about mile 10-11 and for the full marathon it is around 18-20 miles.

2013 Tinker Bell Half Marathon

The 2013 Tinker Bell Half Marathon is one week after the 2013 WDW Marathon Weekend.  I am not ready for either weekend, but I will be out in California for the second Tinker Bell Half Marathon.  I am going to try to do the race no matter what happens with the Dopey Challenge.

This will be a bit of a vacation as well as a race weekend and I've talked my sister in to meeting me out there for some fun in the parks!

2013 WDW Marathon Weekend

Oh how this topic hurts my heart right now.  I should be getting excited to participate in my third Dopey Challenge.  Should be...Instead I just have a heavy heart full of disappointment.  Why?

I am getting over some injuries and illness that I'm pretty sure will cause me to be swept during the half and full marathon.  See, I haven't really trained in seven months.  Life, health, and stupidity took over and I wasn't able to get myself in gear to train.  Yes, I was told by my doctors I was not allowed to run for a couple of months of that, but that doesn't excuse the rest of the time.

So, what am I going to do?  I bought new shoes, new bigger clothes (weight loss didn't happen in 2012), a calf sleeve, and knee braces.  I will be starting all three races.

What's going to happen?  I'm going to do my best.  I'm going to try to have fun.  I'm going to try to give myself a break when I get swept.

No, I don't want to be swept, but I am not going to sit out.  I had to do that for Wine and Dine and I do not ever want to feel that way again.  Even though I know I'm not in shape to finish, I have to try.

This is certainly not what I'd call third time is a charm, but there's always 2014 and my fourth try!

Goodbye 2012 Hello 2013

I know I have been gone from the blog for too long, but another year is gone and here comes the chance for new beginnings!
2012 brought a lot of changes for me.  Some good, some bad.
Good and Bad
I completed all but one runDisney race in 2012.  Unfortunately, I was unable to start the Wine and Dine Half Marathon due to illness.  This was my main goal for the year - while I am super proud of the races I did finish, especially now that I know that I was pretty ill during several of those races and I was dealing with injuries, I am also severely disappointed that I was unable to complete all the races.
Good and Bad
I received news that I was going to be laid off of my job of 9.5 years.  After sending out a few resumes, I interviewed with Walt Disney Parks and Resorts.  Those interviews ended with me accepting a position with Disney and relocating my life to Florida.  I had to list my house in Arizona for short sale and my bank has denied the sale because, "I make to much money."  Apparently, their calculations are much different than mine because I'm pretty sure I can't afford two households, and I now have to foreclose on the home and ruin the credit I worked hard to build.  That is a huge stressor in my life and a real negative for my move.  On the plus side, I love being a Cast Member and working for Disney.
My health in 2012.  It seemed to deteriorate more and more as the year progressed.  As soon as I would get over one illness or injury something would happen.  Unfortunately I ended up getting pretty ill and it took over my thoughts for a while.  I am on the mend now and dealing with trying to find the right doctors for each problem, but at least I'm moving forward.
Sadly, all these health things and moving across the country caused me to lose focus on my training and it pretty much stopped for the past seven months.  I have lost all of my fitness, all my base miles, and all of my cardio.  I have no one to blame but myself on this and I hope I can rectify this situation.

I have the best friends that are always there to support me and push me when I need it.  I would be lost without so many great people in my life.  I hope you all know who you are and realize just how much I appreciate all that you do for me.
