2012 Tinker Bell Trip Report - January 29, 2012

I slept okay, but I did get up at one point to grab some water and I ended up running right in to the wooden bed frame with my knee - such a clod I am!  No harm done though.
The first alarm went off at 3:10am, but I was already awake.  The next alarm went off at 3:15am and I got up and got myself ready to go.  I ate a Powerbar and while my throat is still sore I'm feeling okay right now.

At 3:55am I headed out and started my walk to the race area.  I met a very nice lady from Atlanta that was also doing her Coast to Coast since she finished the Marathon Relay earlier in the month at Walt Disney World.  It was nice having someone friendly to talk with on the walk this morning.

It was about 4:20am when I reached the race site and I headed to take a bio break.  I was having horrible flashbacks of the last half and all the tummy troubles I had.  Then it was just standing around waiting to go to the corrals until about 4:50am.  On the way to the corral there was a line of port-a-potties and I decided to take another quick break since it was right before my corral.

Corral C was my home prior to the race and I entered at 5:05am.  As I was moving along to get closer to the front I noticed a woman wearing all black and she was on the ground "stretching" - I wish I could describe this better, but she was sort of in child's pose with  one leg stretched behind her.  Sort of an odd stretch, but I digress.  There was an older lady walking along and she did not see the lady on the ground stretching and fell face first to the concrete.  It was a really frightening thing to witness.  A few of us went to help the older woman up and thank goodness she was okay and so was the lady stretching.  The lady that fell was complaining about the lady stretching and the lady stretching was complaining that she had to stretch somewhere.  They were both annoyed with each other - see, two sides to each story and both felt they were right.

Waiting in the corral

The announcers did a great job keeping everyone hyped up about the race.  There were a couple of celebrities that spoke - I don't think I knew who they were so I didn't pay much attention.  Corral A took off at 5:47am, a couple of minutes late.  At 5:52am we started moving forward and corral B was off and shortly after I was off.

Today the plan was to run/walk however I could.  I wasn't sure how my breathing would be so I figured I'd take it easy for the first half and try to go faster the second half if I could.  I decided that I wasn't going to let this icky sicky stop me today if I could help it.  As long as I could keep the breathing under control and not cough I'd run some portion of each mile.  I was also going to use my one Lifesaver and sip of water at each mile marker.

Mile one took 14:52 and was just running on the road.  It wasn't super exciting but itwas a good warm up mile and I was feeling okay so far.

Next we moved in to Disneyland and I have to say this was pretty amazing.  There were so many characters out - Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella and Prince Charming, Rapunzel and Flynn Rider were all on a float.  Some of the ones I really enjoyed seeing - Tarzan and Hercules, Pocahontas and John Smith, Wendy and Peter Pan, the Lost Boys took over the carousel, there were pirates everywhere, Captain Hook and Smee, Captain Jack Sparrow, the Three Caballeros and there may have been more.  It was by far the most characters I've ever seen out for a runDisney race - it was very cool.  I ended up walking the park so I could take in all the characters and atmosphere.  Mile two took 14:40.

This course really meandered around the park.  It was really quite a long trek through the park and this offered quite a bit of sightseeing opportunities.  One very odd thing was running through the castle from the front to the back instead of coming from the back out the front.  This meant no great castle photo op, but it was fun to do something a bit different.

Outside Small World

As we exited Disneyland there was mile three and it took me 14:38.  I was feeling pretty consistent at this point.  Downtown Disney was our next destination and this was another shake up in the course compared to the Disneyland Half.  There was a ton of spectator support along here and I saw a sign that I thought was just too funny, it read - Worst Parade Ever!  I was feeling pretty good at this point, the Lifesavers were keeping the cough away.  Exiting Downtown Disney we reached mile four and it took 14:42.

It gets less easy to describe from here on out because we're on the streets at this point.  There are quite a few spectators at street corners.  Mile five took 14:26.  I'm still feeling pretty good at this point, there's no coughing but my chest is tightening up a little bit - nothing serious yet.  The best part - my legs are feeling mighty fine.

Still trudging along on the streets.  Every once in a while there's a cheer squad or band or something to entertain us, but it seems very spread out.  Mile six took 13:55.  I'm noticing that it's getting a little tougher to breathe.  I am able to stop the coughing for the most part which helps.  I decide to run when I can as long as I can control the breathing and I'm feeling grateful that fast walking is not an issue and my legs are feeling good.  Mile seven takes 14:24.

I'm at the Muzeo area and there are more buildings that are a little taller and there seems to be more concrete and I notice it's a bit warmer here.  Overall, the weather has been fantastic.  Sunny, but cool and not too humid - perfect running weather.  Back on Harbor Boulevard and more familiar ground for me.  Mile eight takes 13:45.

Now I'm running short segments until mile 10 where I'll try to run more if I can for the last 5K.  Surprisingly, the legs are holding up pretty well, but breathing is tougher.  Mile nine takes 14:02 and I"m still trudging along.

We're still on the streets but we're nearing areas that the Disneyland Half uses too.  Finally, after what seems like forever I see the mile 10 marker.  Mile 10 takes 14:12.  Now is the time to see what I can do.  I try to run more now.  It's a bit tough to keep the air moving in to the lungs, but the legs are feeling great which helps.  Mile 11 takes 13:17.

Past the mile 11 marker and we pass Garden Walk.  Continuing on I know that California Adventure is getting closer and that means the end is near.

Heading to California Adventure

Mile 12 takes 13:05 and we are now in California Adventure.  I see Sully and Needleman.  I am again surprised at how much distance they have us cover in this park.

I'm running/walking the best that I can at this point.  Time to exit California Adventure and I'm that much closer to finishing.  My legs are still feeling really good and no coughing at this point.  Mile 13 takes 13:24.

The home stretch.  Now I will keep running until the end.

I'm done.  I high five Goofy and Pluto - yeah!  I've very happy that another race is done.  I get my medal, my Coast to Coast medal, a Mylar blanket, water and Powerade.  Then I hop in line for a finisher's photo.  I have a bit of a coughing fit while I'm waiting.
Photobucket
I grab an orange, banana and a bagel.  Then I head out.  It's a bit of a long walk around to Downtown Disney, but that's okay because my legs are feeling fine and I just ate my bagel as I walked.  I finally made it through security and it was about 9:40am.

Back at the hotel around 9:55am.  I ate my fruit and drank my Powerade and tried to stop the coughing.  Coughing seems to start when I stop moving.  I took my time cleaning up, reading, relaxing and ordering some food.

I did a little reflecting and realized that you really can do anything if you want to.  Even sick I could have pushed harder today during the first half.  I am confident that having a base built up is important and is a livesaver as I hadn't run for almost three weeks and I still did okay.  I really need to work on speed.  I love doing these events and hope to continue for many years to come.

At 2:30pm I decided I could use a bit of a nap.  So that's what I did and I finally got going again at 4:30pm.  I have that darn sore throat making swallowing hard again.  The only real pain I'm feeling is that the all of my right foot is a bit sore.

I headed out to California Adventure at 5:00pm and walking felt good.  Stretching the legs is nice.  I entered the park at 5:15pm.  My only goal was to ride the Little Mermaid.  It was a 20 minute wait, but it moved right along.  I enjoyed my journey under the sea until the end when we stopped for about five minutes.

Time to see what else I want to do.  I decided to walk to Tower of Terror, but the wait was 45 minutes so that wasn't going to happen.  Monsters Inc was also a long wait, as was Soarin' and everythinge else.  So, I headed out.

Disneyland was next and I was in the park by 6:10pm.  I headed straight to Pirates and a 20 minute wait.  I had the front row all to myself and no, I didn't get wet at all.  Then I headed to Haunted Mansion and it was a walk on!  Had some fun witnessing the ghostly havoc and mayhem.  The second moving walkway was not moving and it was a nice uphill climb - so great after a half marathon.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad was a 15 minute wait, which turned out to be even shorter.  I love this one at night - awesome!  I walked around looking for a short line, but the park was packed and they cancelled the fireworks show due to technical difficulties.

At 7:30pm I headed out of the park and over to World of Disney for a little more shopping.  Right after the race the I Did It! shirts were everywhere, but now they are nowhere to be seen.  I bought a couple of things and decided to call it a night.

On the way back to the hotel I stopped at a market to grab a snack and some drinks.  I was back in my room by 8:15pm.  I snacked a bit, read, watched some TV and just chilled out.  I packed some stuff around 9:40pm and stopped to journal a bit.  I was pretty tired as it had been a long day and I headed to bed at 10:30pm.

2012 Tinker Bell Trip Report - January 28, 2012

The first alarm went off at 7:00am and I shut that down right quick.  The second alarm went off at 7:15am and yes, it got turned off as well.  I decided to take it easy and just sort of dozed until 8:30am.
I noticed that my throat is still pretty sore.  I can honestly say I've never had a sore throat for such a long time before and it's getting a bit old.  I finally got up and got moving and got ready to head out for the day.

At 9:30am I headed out and made the walk to the Disneyland Hotel to visit the expo again.  Oddly enough, as I was walking through Downtown Disney I ran in to De'Dee and crew - funny that we keep running in to each other. Once I got to the Disneyland Hotel they were making us line up outside since it wasn't quite 10:00am yet.  It was okay to wait as the folks in line were nice and we all shared race info and experiences.

10:00am came and the expo opened and I went straight in to the Official Merchandise area.  I was on a mission to find a shirt for Lisa.  I found the shirt she mentioned pretty quickly, but I was unsure about what size to get so I called her and chatted for a few minutes.  I grabbed the correct shirt and then another Bondi Band and a pin to send to Lisa with the shirt.  The line to check out was short and quick this early in the morning - always nice!

I figured I'd hang out and wait to see Jeff Galloway speak since it was 10:30am and he was scheduled for 11:00am.  I enjoyed sitting and resting for a few minutes.  Then the speaker line up was changed and Jeff wasn't going to be on until noon, so I headed over to the expo and wandered around a bit more.

There was nothing that I had to buy so I took the walk over to Disneyland.  I was in the park by 11:20am.  I was hungry, but I decided to head on Pirates first.  It was about a 20 minute wait, but worth it of course.  Next up was Haunted Mansion which was also a 20 minute wait.  I love both of these rides so it was a great way to start my time in the park.

I was thinking that I would do lunch at Hungry Bear, but it was a bit crowded and a tour group entered right as I got there.  Instead I headed over to ride Winnie the Pooh - I found it rather odd that it was a four minute wait.  Still a cute ride.

After that I ended up walking toward Tomorrowland and along the way I ended up at Village Haus.  Seems to be my go to spot when everything else is just too crowded or I don't want to walk any further.  I sat and ate and read and relaxed for a bit.  As I was almost done with my meal a lady came and put her stuff on my table and pulled out a chair - she was going to sit down with her whole family without even asking if I minded.  I just found that rather odd to say the least.  The rest of the family saw several other tables and took her to one of those.  You just never know.

I continued on to Tomorrowland and the park was getting pretty crowded by this point.  So, at 2:00pm I decided to do some shopping and headed to the Emporium.  I still wasn't feeling great so it seemed like a good option.  I bought a few things I wanted and at 2:20pm I headed out of the park.

The walk back to the hotel was quick and painless and I was back in my room in about 15 minutes.  I was tired so I watched some TV and fell asleep.  At 5:00pm I thought I'd head to the market to see if there was anything good to eat for dinner - there wasn't anything I wanted.  I did buy a couple of bottled waters - one to drink and one to fill my race bottle for the morning.  Then I ended up ordering room service again.  I had my dinner and just enjoyed the peace and quiet.

It was time to set out my race gear.  I always set out all my gear the night before so that I can just get up and get ready to go in the morning without any drama.  Then I figured I should probably decide what time I should get up in the morning and set the alarms.

At about 9:00pm I decided that it was time for bed since it was going to be an early morning!

Weekly Review: Feb 13 - 19

Goals for workouts this year:1. 100-125 miles run/walk per month2. One 20+ mile run/walk per month
3. One day of Pilates per week
4. One day of Strength Training per week
5. One day of Bike or Elliptical per week
6. One Incline Workout on the Treadmill per week

Here's this week's recap
Monday
PM Workout:  Treadmill walk 4.32mi @ 13:57 per mi
Notes:  Oh my, that was one of the hardest walks I've had in a while.  I can so tell that I've been sick and haven't been working out.  At least I finally got a few miles in, but at what price I'm not sure.

Tuesday
SICK
Notes:  I can't believe this, but I think I'm getting a UTI.  I am not feeling good again and it's unbelievable that I'm having more health issues.

Wednesday
SICK
Notes:  Trying to flush this infection without having to go to the doctor.  So far it's not getting worse, but it doesn't seem any better either.  I am super tired and worn out right now.

Thursday
SICK
Notes:  Okay, I am definitely sick again.  I really think I'll have to go to the doctor, but I know that I won't be able to make it today.  Work is a bit hectic right now so I'll try to hold out until tomorrow.

Friday
SICK
Notes:  A very long day at work, I'm not feeling good at all.  I left the office at 6:45pm and headed straight to urgent care.  I was diagnosed with a UTI and put on a 10 day cycle of antibiotics and rest.  Great just what I need more antibiotics.

Saturday
SICK
Notes:  I really didn't do anything at all today.  I'm so worn out and feeling cruddy that I got up fed the dogs and went straight back to bed.  Not how I wanted to spend my weekend.

Sunday
AM Workout: Lost Dutchman 8K Trail Run - 7.92mi, 2.3mi warm up walk, 4.72mi @ 17:00 per mi, .83mi cool down walk
Notes:  The official chip time was 1hr 20mins (16:10 per mi).  This was a slow walk with me being sick and my friend having back problems.  It was still nice to get some mileage in, but it would have been even better if I wouldn't have been sick.

Training Notes
I feel like all I've been able to do this year is complain and make excuses.  It is not how I want to be and not how I want to come off to people.  I'm frustrated and exhausted mentally and physically.  I am still battling sinus issues, but feel like I have a better handle on those finally.  Just when I get those under control, I end up with a urinary tract infection.  Let me tell you that this is no fun.  It's definitely taking a toll on me and I am not happy to be on another round of antibiotics - I'm not a fan of taking medicine.

I did really well with food during the first part of the week, but that went to heck later in the week as I got sicker and had to work longer hours.  I am so out of control here - good, bad - I'm all over the place.  I know I have to get better here, but I'm having trouble wrapping my head around it.
I am leaving for Walt Disney World in just a few days.  I do hope that I am feeling better before I head out.  I know I'll still be taking medicine so that sort of sucks, but I just want to feel better.  I've hardly done any working out this year and I'm concerned about the half marathon next weekend.  I know I can finish it, but I doubt I will be able to do as well as I'd like to.  All I can do is my best though.

I hope things are going well for you and that you're able to keep striving for your goals!

2012 Lost Dutchman 8K Trail Run - Race Recap

The alarm went off way too early at 4:30am this morning, but I decided to sleep in until 5:00am instead.  I got up and fed the dogs and got ready to head out.  My friend picked me up at 5:30am and we were on our way out to the Rodeo Grounds.  A few miles away from venue I had to have my friend pull over so that I could throw up.  Yeah - not the best start to the day.

I suppose that I should back up a little bit.  I ended up coming down with a urinary tract infection this last week.  I took my antibiotic this morning, but didn't really have time to find something to eat.  My bad, the antibiotic apparently had a very negative reaction with my stomach this morning.  At least I felt a bit better after I threw up, but how awful.  At least I didn't throw up in the car I supposed.

We arrived and parked.  It's almost three quarters of a mile to the race start and since I was sick yesterday I didn't get to the expo to pick up my packet.  We headed off in the cold and dark and it was quick and easy to get my packet.  We walked back to the car to drop stuff off and then walked back to the race start area again.

Now, with me being sick and my friend struggling with two bulging disks and compression in her back there were no thoughts of running today.  It was going to be a nice slow walk through the desert.  The gun went off at 7:45am and we were walking.

It was a beautiful day to be out there.  It was overcast and cool.  Such a great day to be out there and I am sure the full marathoners were loving the weather too!

Nothing real exciting happened today on the course.  We just kept moving along and finally made it to the finish line.

This was our fifth time doing this event and it doesn't disappoint.  The events are well organized and supported and the courses well marked.  It's also a really pretty location out of the city and away from all the noise and commotion of the cities and towns.  If you ever want to come to Arizona to do a race, I highly recommend these events.  The full marathon course is a Boston qualifier and is a small field of runners.  There is also a half marathon, 10K, 8K Trail, and 2 Mile Fun Run.

2012 Tinker Bell Trip Report - January 27, 2012

The first alarm went off at 4:00am this morning and was promptly turned off.  The second alarm went off at 5:00am and was also promptly turned off.   Thankfully my internal clock realized what time it was and I was up at 5:15am.  I fed the dogs and got ready to go.  Luckily I'm pretty speedy because I got a message from Super Shuttle that the van was 10 minutes away and it was 5:36am, which meant he was early since my pickup time was scheduled for 6:00am.

At 5:42am I headed outside to wait for the shuttle and three minutes later I was on my way.  It was an uneventful trip to pick up more passengers and then off to the airport we went.  I checked my bag, went through security and headed to the wrong gate area.  Since I was there I took a bio break and then headed over to the right gate area.  I bought a bottled water and headed to sit at the gate.

I found a seat, did a little bit of work and then sat and watched people and did some self reflecting.  I haven't been able to workout since the full marathon.  I've been sick and feeling pretty cruddy.  I think I'm over the bronchitis and sinus infection but I'm still fighting a constantly stuffy nose, perpetual sore throat and some coughing.  I've been eating horribly and my weight is up.  Tonight is the 5K and it will be interesting to see if I can do any running - we'll see what happens.

Oh my goodness, that descent in to the airport was totally outrageous.  I've had some rough flights before, but I've never felt anything like this one.  It felt as if someone grabbed the plane and was playing Frisbee with it.  I love to fly, but this one even got my control freak a bit worked up and of course there was a super nervous flyer in front of me - yikes!

We landed at 8:44am and it was quick and easy to exit the plane and I headed straight for baggage claim and a quick bio break.  Only had to wait a few minutes for my luggage and was surrounded by other people here for the races too.  I headed out to find Super Shuttle.  I checked in, even though the guy was a complete jerk and had to explain that my confirmation number was really from Super Shuttle - ugh!  There was another solo runner and two other first time half marathoners on the van too.  The van was completely full when we finally headed out.

The stop right before mine (I was last) was the  Disneyland Hotel.  It was 9:40am and the line for the Expo was the longest I've ever seen at a Disneyland race.  Wow!  I was dropped off at my hotel and I headed inside.  I was able to get my room immediately and I headed to check it out.

I stayed at the Fairfield Inn and my room was 337, on the third floor.  Wow - this is a really nice room.  I'm super impressed.  Very nice and clean and there was one picture on the wall that I found a bit odd for Disneyland.

I pretty much dropped everything off in my room and headed out to walk to the Expo at about 10:00am.  This was the most activity I've done in a couple of weeks and while my legs felt really good I'm really overly warm and not feeling 100%.  I made it to packet pick up at 10:24am and I got in line.

When I arrive, I don't see a Coast To Coast line.  I ask and find out that they are doing the Coast To Coast bracelet at the same time as normal packet pickup.  So, I head over to my line - why is my line always the longest?  It never fails.  After a short wait I got my half marathon packet, pins, and necklace voucher.  Then I headed over to the 5K packet pickup and there was no line at all so that was nice and quick.  I had to go to another area to get my necklace.  Then it was time to head up to get my shirts and goody bags.  I walked right up and got both shirts with no wait.

Now that the important part is done, I went straight to the official merchandise area and started shopping.  I found a men's technical Coast To Coast shirt, then I found an I Did It! shirt and I was so happy because I saw sizes from XS - to 3X.  Thank you runDisney for finally listening and realizing that not all runners are made in the same size!  I grabbed a key chain and as I'm standing there looking at other things I ran right in to Matt's aunt, De'Dee!  It was great running in to her and we chatted for a few minutes and decided to try to meet up for the 5K tonight.  I grabbed a Bondi Band, walked through one more time to see if there was anything else I wanted.

Finally I got in line to pay - the line was super long.  It took almost half an hour to get through the line but it wasn't too bad.  I grabbed a pin and checked out - got to love the 20% discount with the annual pass.  I actually got out cheaper than I usually do!

The expo was calling to me.  Now, you have to understand that this Expo is not huge, but they do cram a lot of stuff in to it.  I browsed around and finally found a Power Bar for before the half on Sunday morning.  I also stopped at the runDisney booth to see if there were doing any pre-registration for anything I wasn't already registered for.  Nope!

At 11:45am I headed out and walked back to the hotel.  I was back in my room at 12:15pm.  Walking feels okay and isn't making me cough so that's a positive.  Since I hadn't had anything to eat yet I was getting hungry so I ordered room service.  Room service comes from the restaurant right in front of the hotel.  I sat and watched Mulan as I enjoyed my lunch.  Then at 2:30pm I figured I should try to nap for a little bit if I could.

I just dozed off and on and watched TV until about 7:00pm.  My throat is pretty sore again and I managed to bite my cheek and take a chunk out of it - ouch.  I'm really not feeling well still - and it sucks.  I got up and took my time getting ready, took some aspirin and headed out to walk to Disneyland at about 8:45pm.

It is completely windy out.  It feels really odd walking toward Disneyland while everyone else is going the other way and I'm wearing running gear.  I got there about 9:00pm and met up with De'Dee a few minutes later.  We chatted and waited to go in the park.

At 9:30pm they let us in and we headed down Main Street where we got to stand and wait.  We were in the park pretty quickly so we were right at the end of Main Street, pretty close to the castle.  They had a DJ keeping people energized and having fun.  We moved even closer to the castle as they roped off behind us.  They were setting up makeshift corrals - we were in A corral - ha, that's the only time I'll ever be in corral A :)!  There were going to be 4 corrals for this race.

Here are some stats for the weekend that they were announcing - 4000 runners for the 5K, 1300 kids, 48 states represented (No Maine or New Hampshire), 48 birthdays, 71% from California, 2nd highest state represented Florida, 920 men registered for the half, 10 countries, youngest half runner 14, oldest man 80, oldest woman 80, 508 people from San Diego, 11,082 women, 12,000 people registered for the events.

Finally it was time for the National Anthem - it was played on the trumpet as a sing-a-long.  I love it when they do this - it's very cool to hear the crowd sing.  Now it was time for  Tinker Bell to fly - that had to be a bit frightening with all the wind.  It was pretty cool having her all lit up and flying around the castle (take a look below).

It was time to start.  The start was to the right of the castle.  It was a bit congested right at the start, but I've certainly been in worse.  We did a run/walk just based on how each of us was feeling.  The park was relatively dark in places.  I really wish I could tell you a ton about the course, but it was dark and I was concentrating on breathing.  I know that we went through Toon Town and Frontierland.  There were photo stops with the Lost Boys, Hook and Smee, and parade floats.  It wasn't long before we were backstage and at the one water stop on the course.  I remembered this hill from last year - there's a bit of a nasty downhill/uphill section as you leave Disneyland and head in to the promenade on the way across to California Adventure.  We went by Tower of Terror and on to Paradise Pier and finally the finish line.

We grabbed our medals, water, fruit twist and banana. Then we joined a long line of runners to get a finisher photo in front of the Fun Wheel - I hoped it turned out because it was a pretty cool spot for a photo.

It was time to head out of the park and De'Dee and I headed our separate ways.  It was really great having someone to run/walk with and I really enjoyed the company and the race.

Never Land 5K Medal

I did okay during the race, breathing with all the sinus issues was a bit rough at times.  Mile one was 14:28, mile two was 14:03, mile three was 13:44 and one tenth of a mile was 12:14 - total time was 42:19 for an average of 13:39 per mile.

At 11:25pm I headed back to the hotel and I was in my room at 11:40pm.  As soon as I got back in my room, the coughing started and didn't stop for quite some time.  I'm a bit raspy in the lungs now, but my legs felt really good so that gives me a little hope.

Bedtime came at 12:30am and tomorrow should be park time, the expo and lots of rest!
