Thank You for the Concern!

I've had quite a few comments regarding my still being sick.  I wanted to just post a quick thank you!  It means a lot to me that you care enough to post :)!

Just so you know, I did go to the doctor when I got back from WDW.  I have completed a 10 day dose of some hefty antibiotics, Mucinex, and cough syrup.  Thankfully the antibiotics did wipe out the infection and got rid of most of the coughing.

I am now dealing with some strange sinus issue.  It's been very warm here in AZ and we have a ton of things blooming.  I think I may have been hit by some sort of allergy.  I am battling a very sore throat, sinus drainage and the occasional coughing fit.  I'll be trying some new allergy/sinus medicine this week to see if that helps and if there's no change I'll be headed back to the doctor.

So, no worries - I am working to get over this and I hope to be back on track very soon!

January 2012 Wrap Up

Weight Watch: -3.8 poundsWhile that number looks okay, I can assure you that I have put on a few pounds since the 2012 Dopey Trip, being sick and then the 2012 Tinker Bell Trip.  I am working on getting my focus back in place and hopefully I can turn things back around.

Mileage Watch:
Run/Walk: 77.31 miles
Bike: 0.0 miles
Elliptical: 0.0 miles
Total Miles: 77.31 miles

Where do I begin?  Well, the year started off good enough with a nice New Year's Day 5K.  It was a good warm up race and didn't feel too bad overall. Next, I took a nice little trip to Walt Disney World to participate in a little thing called the Dopey Challenge.  I completed the three races - unfortunately I did not better my times and that was due to the illness I ended up with prior to the Half Marathon.  I learned a lot about myself during those races - I am proud to say that I possess a mental strength that I thankfully don't have to use everyday.  I continued to get sicker and when I got home I visited my Dr. and found out that I had Bronchitis, a Sinus Infection, and swollen glands, nose, throat, and sinuses.  I was put on a very strong dose of antibiotics for 10 days in conjunction with Mucinex and some powerful cough syrup.  These medicines got rid of the infection and most of my coughing is gone, but during this time I was unable to put any miles in.  Then came the Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend.  I had no idea what I was going to be able to do, but I knew I was going to do it.  The races went pretty well and I was able to work around the remaining sinus drainage, terribly sore throat and occasional coughing fit.

Goal Review
I completed the Dopey Challenge and the Tinker Bell race events.  Considering I ran 4 of the 5 races sick I am very happy with the fact that I finished all of them.  While I wasn't happy with my times for any of the races, I am satisfied because I know that I did my best with the circumstances.

Sadly, I failed to meet my 100-125 run/walk miles per month goal.  This month it wasn't because I didn't want to do the miles, but because health issues stopped me from doing them.  It is not the way I was hoping to start the year, but I will again accept what is and move to make the next month better.

February 2012
The first part of February should allow me some time to gain my strength back, get rid of this sinus thing and get ready for the next big events.  The end of the month has me traveling back to Walt Disney World for the Princess Half Marathon.  I am excited to do this race again.  I did the first one in 2009 and this is the race that gave me the half marathon PR that I still list (even though it's a bit old now).  While I don't know that I'll be able to PR this race, I am hoping to have a good showing and enjoy the race (hopefully, healthy).

I know that I have to start working on my weight loss.  I've just been making really bad choices lately and  the only reason I have is laziness.  I have been taking the easy way out, using being sick as an excuse to just stop and pick up anything for dinner, not eating breakfast, etc...No, I don't have anyone to blame but me and I am really hoping that I can turn this mindset around.

I hope you have had a Happy and Healthy New Year!  January may be over, but that doesn't mean you should give up on the goals you made in the New Year, you have lots of time to continue your journey!

Has anyone else noticed that the 2013 Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend and the 2013 Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend are on consecutive weekends in 2013?

This will make getting the Coast to Coast Challenge Medal in January a little more difficult than it was this year.

Weekly Review: Jan 23 - 29

Goals for workouts this year:
1. 100-125 miles run/walk per month
2. One 20+ mile run/walk per month
3. One day of Pilates per week
4. One day of Strength Training per week
5. One day of Bike or Elliptical per week
6. One Incline Workout on the Treadmill per week

Here's this week's recap
Monday
SICK
Notes: I cannot say that I'm feeling very confident about the races this weekend when I'm still fighting this coughing.

Tuesday
SICK
Notes: Still coughing a lot and battling a very sore throat.

Wednesday
SICK
Notes: I think I'm starting to feel better, but my throat continues to be so sore that swallowing is difficult to say the least.

Thursday
SICK
Notes: Sleep has been very elusive lately, my sore throat keeps waking me up.  I haven't done a single mile since the full marathon and I just don't know what to expect for this weekend's races!

Friday
AM Workout: Walk from hotel to Disneyland Hotel and back to hotel and then back to Disneyland and to the hotel - 2.44mi no target
PM Workout:  Disneyland Never Land 5K - 4.04mi, .47mi warm up walk, 3.1mi @ 13:39 per mi, .47mi cool down walk
Notes: Traveled to California.  Walked from the hotel to the Disneyland Hotel for the Expo, back to the hotel and then from the hotel to Disneyland and back to the hotel.  It was good because at least I didn't have many coughing attacks.  Ran/walked the Never Land 5K with De'Dee.  We were able to run/walk as we felt and I really enjoyed the race at night through the parks.  I still had a super sore throat and breathing was a bit rough during the race but I didn't have any coughing fits until after the race (which I'll take).  I am pretty happy with the results overall and it was great to have a running buddy for the race.

Saturday
AM Workout:  Walk - 1.5mi @ no target
Notes: Walked from the hotel to the Disneyland Hotel for the Expo.  Spent time in Disneyland and walked back to the hotel.

Sunday
AM Workout:  Tinker Bell Half - 15.7mi, .87mi warm up walk, 13.45mi @ 14:16 per mi, 1.38mi cool down walk
PM Workout:  Walk .94mi no target
Notes: The Tinker Bell Half was pretty amazing.  I ran the first half slower than the second half.  Was able to keep up the run/walk routine through the entire race.  Managed to maintain coughing to a minimum during the race.  My legs held up beautifully, I was completely amazed that I didn't have any leg pain at all.  Breathing was a bit tough from mile 6 on, but I was able to contain it through walk breaks.

Training Notes
The first part of the week was full of doubt and fear for the races at the end of the week.  I was terribly worried that the races were going to be really painful and bad because of the lack of training for almost three weeks.  I knew that my attitude was going to play a big part in my finishing and enjoyment of these races.  So, I had to mentally tell myself, enough, sick or not, I'm going to enjoy these races and finish them.  I knew I'd finish and I was going to do my best to enjoy them too.

With my attitude in check, I headed to California and did my best to do what I set out to do.  After all, this was about a new race with a new course and of course, new bling!  Friday night's 5K went okay.  I was lucky to have De'Dee there to help keep my mind off my sore throat and push me to do more than I probably would have on my own.  This was a good start.  Then for the half I was able to push myself to do my best while attempting to keep my breathing under control.  I was able to do pretty well and I feel great about what I did.  Now I can hope to get over this crud and get ready for the Princess Half.

I didn't bother trying to be good with food this week.  I know, stupid, but it is what it is and I'll try to regroup and do better.

Two fabulous events are now done in 2012 and I can look forward to the next event next month.  While the events didn't go exactly the way that I wanted them to go, I cannot complain because I finished them.  I found an inner strength that I knew was there, but that I haven't had to pull up as much as I have this month.

Here's this week's recap
Monday
SICK
Notes: Still so sick I can't even attempt to get any miles in.  I just can't stop coughing.

Tuesday
SICK
Notes: I wish that I could say I'm feeling better, but I'm not yet.

Wednesday
SICK
Notes: Night time seems to be the worst, I just can't stop the coughing even with the cough syrup.  I want to get miles in so bad.

Thursday
SICK
Notes: Thought I was starting to feel better, but every time I move I start coughing and get overheated.  So frustrated!

Friday
SICK
Notes: All day I thought I'd be able to get some miles in this evening, but the coughing and tiredness is just too much right now.

Saturday
SICK
Notes: So much for today's long run/walk.  I'm still coughing so much it's actually making me very ill.  The good news is, I think the infection part is pretty much gone.  I'm wondering if I've gone from being sick to having a really bad allergy attack.

Sunday
SICK
Notes: Another day down the drain and no miles.  I've been sneezing and coughing all day, my sinuses are completely stuffy and sore and I feel kind of miserable.  I am getting really nervous about the Tinker Bell Half next weekend.  I am sure that two weeks of not working out is not helping me in any way.

Training Notes
Boy, I can't say much good about this week.  Just when I start feeling better, this darn stuff kicks back in and drags me back down.  I was really hoping this weekend would see me get some miles in, but no such luck.  While I could force myself to put miles in, I figure that would cause me to do more damage than good so I'm trying to take it easy and let myself heal.  Trust me, that's not easy for me!

Food was just a mess this week.  Since I wasn't feeling good, I made very bad choices.  I take full responsibility for that and will work to correct this problem as soon as I could.

Next weekend is the Never Land 5K and Tinker Bell Half Marathon.  I have delusions of doing really well, but if I can't shake this cough it's going to be a bit rough.  So, reality is telling me to just go and have a good time and see what happens, and that's what I'm going to do :)!

2. One 20+ mile run/walk per month
3. One day of Pilates per week
4. One day of Strength Training per week
5. One day of Bike or Elliptical per week
6. One Incline Workout on the Treadmill per week

Here's this week's recap
Monday
SICK
Notes: I was so sick I didn't even leave my hotel room.  I couldn't talk, had a bad fever, sore throat, cough, stuffy nose and the works.  Very miserable day.

Tuesday
SICK
Notes: Very long flight home while sick.

Wednesday
SICK
Notes: Ended up only working a half day in the office and then came home.  Not feeling well at all.

Thursday
SICK
Notes: Headed to the doctor - bronchitis, sinus infection and swollen glands, throat, nose, and sinuses.  10 days of antibiotics and cough syrup in my future.  UGH!

Friday
SICK
Notes: Still feeling really rotten.

Saturday
SICK
Notes: Following the doctor's orders and not doing anything today.

Sunday
SICK
Notes: The coughing is just really difficult to deal with.  I can't move without starting to cough.

Training Notes
What can I say, this week has totally sucked.  I didn't get to enjoy the last day of my vacation, travel was rough and it just seemed to get worse when I got home.  Some times you just can't win, but I'll get over this and move on as best as I can.

Food was hit and miss this week.  I have to admit there's not much in my house and I haven't felt like shopping so I haven't made the best choices, but there has been a lot of soup in my diet since it doesn't hurt my throat to eat it.

I'm feeling lazy and annoyed that I cannot get a workout in.  I had no pain after the full marathon and I could have easily gotten right back on the training track, but this darn sick has put me in my place.  I'll get past this though!

Weekly Review: Jan 2 - 8

Goals for workouts this year:
1. 100-125 miles run/walk per month
2. One 20+ mile run/walk per month
3. One day of Pilates per week
4. One day of Strength Training per week
5. One day of Bike or Elliptical per week
6. One Incline Workout on the Treadmill per week

Here's this week's recap
Monday
PM Workout: Treadmill - 2.78mi, .29mi warm up walk, 1.01mi @ 11:14 per mi, 1mi @ 12:34 per mi, .48mi cool down walk
Notes: I actually ran a full mile with no walk breaks.  It's been a really long time since I've done that, I wasn't even sure if I could do that any more.  Really felt like a good workout to start out the big race week.

Tuesday
REST
Notes: Had too many errands, shopping and house prep to do in order to get ready to travel.

Wednesday
REST
Notes: Travel to Walt Disney World.  Did walk around the Magic Kingdom.

Thursday
REST
Notes: Spent the day in the parks and at the expo getting ready for the big races.

Friday
AM Workout:  Disney's Family Fiesta Fun Run 5K - 3.21mi @ 14:23 per mi
Notes: Had a really good run/walk today.  It felt a bit odd running dressed up for a race, but it was fun.  My legs felt really fresh and ready to get the miles in.  I didn't push too hard, but I took it easy and did some nice run/walk segments.

Saturday
AM Workout:  Walt Disney World Half Marathon - 14.61mi, .3mi warm up walk, 13.39mi @ 14:51 per mi, .92mi cool down walk
Notes: Started getting a sore throat yesterday and it did not get better.  Sore throat was feeling pretty bad all race.  Had a side stitch and stomach cramps for the first half of the race.  Had to stop on the course, then I felt a bit better.  One of the roughest halfs I've had in a while.

Sunday
AM Workout:  Walt Disney World Marathon - 28.22mi, .3mi warm up walk, 27mi @ 15:11 per mi, .92mi cool down walk
Notes: Rough night with a killer sore throat and a pretty bad fever.  Couldn't take a proper deep breath.  Wasn't sure if I was going to be able to get through the whole race, but I did.  It was sheer will power at times.  Got very hot about half way through the race, but there were plenty of water stops at least.  Never been so miserable during a race.

Training Notes
One of my goals for the year was to finish the Dopey Challenge...I was really hoping to better my times for each of the races, but illness got the better of me.  I have to be happy that I was able to finish all three races.  I am a bit bummed that I got sick because my legs felt absolutely fabulous through all three races - there was no knee, hip or foot pain at all.  It would have been nice to see what I could have done under better circumstances, but I guess that's what next year is for!

I didn't do too bad with food while at Walt Disney World.  I ate more than I should have, but I did manage to curb a lot of snacking and eating just to eat.  Of course, being sick certainly didn't hurt in this respect.

Walt Disney World Marathon weekend is over and now I have to work on getting ready for the Tinker Bell Half in just a couple of weeks!

Quick Hello

Hey folks - sorry I've been off air for a while.

I got pretty sick while at Walt Disney World and ran the races any way.  Yes, I finished, but those are stories for a later post.

I ended up pretty run down and even sicker once I got home.  I'm on the mend now and I'll start posting a trip report  as soon as I can.

Countdown to 2012 WDW Marathon Weekend #0

#0 - Meeting up with old friends and making new friends

That's right, I'm on my way to Walt Disney World for the 2012 Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend.  We've made it to the end of my countdown and I hope you've enjoyed this series of things I look forward to at Walt Disney World.

The last and very important entry in the countdown list is getting to meet up with old friends and hopefully meeting new friends that will become old friends!

Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend is a time for those of us with like minds and joy of running to get together and celebrate our sport, our spirits, and our accomplishments over three days of events that will test our mental and physical strength.

I am excited to meet up with my Team Voice team mates - since we're scattered across the country we don't get to see each other as often as I would like, but when we do get to see each other you can be assured that a lot of laughing and fun will be had by all!

I am also excited to meet some folks that I've met through this blog and other blogs that I follow.  It's always fun to put faces and names together to gain a bit more connection with the folks that I communicate with electronically.

So, if you're going to be in WDW during the 2012 WDW Marathon Weekend, I'd love to meet you.  You can contact me on Twitter at @wdwalone - send me a message and maybe we can meet up and say hi!

Countdown to 2012 WDW Marathon Weekend #1

#1 - New Bling For My Collection

There's nothing so great as earning new medals.  I take great pride in my medals as each one represents a journey of many months of planning, training, and finally putting it all on the line on race day.

This year, I'm looking forward to earning these beauties.  Photos came from the runDisney Facebook page.

Why am I looking forward to the Walt Disney World Marathon?
Ah, this is a loaded question - do I really look forward to a full marathon?  Well, yeah I do.  At least I look forward to this one.

The start of the full marathon will be pretty much the same as the half marathon which I detailed in Countdown to 2012 WDW Marathon Weekend #3 so you can read that for more information about the pre-race process.

The race starts and you have a long journey ahead of you.  The first couple of miles take you along the road, in to the Epcot parking lot and finally in to the park.  It's a short journey through Epcot this time around and before you know it you'll be head back out of the park.

Now you begin your journey along the road and towards the Magic Kingdom.  It's quite a stretch of road and you'll chew up quite a few miles.  Back to the Contemporary and the hill that everyone loves to hate.  Keep putting one foot in front of the other and you'll be past that hill in no time.

Just past mile 10 and you'll be heading in to the Magic Kingdom.  The best part of the course is right there in front of you - Main Street and cheering crowds.  Enjoy your run along this extra special part of the course and soak in the atmosphere.

You head along through the Magic Kingdom and by the time you exit you'll be through 11 miles of the race.  You'll be going along by the Grand Floridian and then the Polynesian and as you come up on the Walt Disney World Speedway you'll be hitting the half way point of the race.  Yes, you're half way through - it's all figuratively downhill from here.

This next part of the course is long and can be a bit boring.  It's all road running and there's not a whole lot to see along this part of the course that leads you towards the Animal Kingdom.  As you come up to mile 16 you'll hit a food spot - lots of bananas to be had here.  It can be helpful to eat one of these bananas, but only if you know it won't make you sick to your stomach!

The course now takes you through Animal Kingdom.  This is a really fun part of the course, both backstage and onstage.  Unfortunately your time in the Animal Kingdom will go way to quickly and you'll wish you had more time in this park.

Now you're back on the road for quite a while.  Around mile 20 there's an out and back section that can be good and bad.  The cool part is the big screen that you can see yourself on as you run by and you can see how many people are behind you or in my case how few people :).

Mile 22 leads you in to Hollywood Studios.  I love and hate this part.  I love going through the park, I hate dodging park goers.  The park will be open by the time I am running through and guests are very impatient when they have to wait for runners to clear the path so they can continue on their path to whatever attraction they can't wait to get to.  The Cast Members do their best, but some people are just plain rude during this part.

As you head out of Hollywood Studios, you travel around the Boardwalk area.  This is another area of the course that I really like.  It's sort of peaceful, you know you're getting close and Epcot is just up ahead.

You enter Epcot and you know you have just over a mile to go.  Since I'm slow, I'll end up congratulating a lot of other finishers as they pass off the course, many with beer in hand :)...I love that part, it's cool to see so many medals walking around and I know that I don't have too much further to go before I get one of those medals for myself.

Around World Showcase, through Future World and now you're exiting Epcot for the last time.  There's the 26 mile marker and you have .2 mile to go.  You're so close now, the smile spreads across your face.  Keep that smile in place and once you hit the finish chute get ready to be overwhelmed by your accomplishment.

As you cross the line, throw your hands up and put on your biggest and best smile.  Make sure you mug for the photographers - you did it, you're a marathoner.  Don't forget to look for the characters at the end of the race because you'll want to give them big happy high fives.

Don't stop moving quite yet, as you continue through the finish area you'll finally reach the volunteers with those coveted medals.  You can't help but beam at the volunteer that places the medal around your neck.

The glow of the full marathon will last for weeks - you'll be sharing war stories with fellow runners, bragging to friends and family, explaining yourself to folks that just don't understand.  The best part - it really doesn't matter if no one gets why you tackled 26.2 miles because you'll feel invincible.

If you have the time on the course, there are plenty of opportunities for photos with characters.  If you can take the time, stop and enjoy that on course entertainment.  I will have to enjoy it as I keep moving because I'm not quite fast enough to take the time to wait in lines :).

December 2011 Wrap Up

Weight Watch: +4.8 pounds
No, I am not at all happy with that number.  I know that I did this to myself.  I have just been stumbling a lot on this area, but do not despair - I have not given up and I will continue to work on this area of my life.

Mileage Watch:
Run/Walk: 82.38 miles
Bike: 32.00 miles
Elliptical: 0.0 miles
Total Miles: 114.38 miles

I am not overly happy with the number for this month.  I slacked a lot and the numbers show it.  On the other hand, my body was telling me that it needed more rest and I listened.  I just hope that it doesn't negatively impact the Dopey Challenge.

Goal Review
I completed the Runner's Den/Fiesta Bowl Half Marathon in December.  I was consistent, finishing in 3 hours yet again.  The legs held up okay though so I can't complain too much.  The Lifesavers for fuel still seem to be working pretty well for me.  This race kept me going with my one race per month goal for the year and my fifth half for the year.

I just managed to stay within my 80-100 run/walk miles per month goal.  Of course I would have loved to have more miles to report for December, but at least I got miles in and managed to keep to my goal for 2011.

January 2012
January promises to be pretty darn exciting.  I started out the month with a 5K.  Next week I have the Dopey Challenge.  Then at the end of the month I have the Tinker Bell events at Disneyland.  I am sure it will prove to be a challenging month, but a challenge I think I am ready for.

I know that I have to start working more diligently on my weight loss.  I've just been making really bad choices lately and there's no good reason for it.  This will keep being a work in progress and hopefully at some point things will all click again.

Hope you all had a Happy New Year!  Enjoy the promise of new things to come and see what great things you can make happen this year!

Weekly Review: Dec 26 - Jan 1

Goals for workouts this year:
1. 80-100 miles run/walk per month
2. One day of Pilates per week
3. One day of Strength Training per week
4. One day of Bike or Elliptical per week
5. One Incline Workout on the Treadmill per week

Here's this week's recap
Monday
REST
Notes: Okay, so I really should have worn my Garmin at Disneyland as it would have been extremely interesting to see just how much walking I actually did today.  Disneyland may be small, but if you criss cross the park over and over that distance has to add up.

Tuesday
PM Workout:  Treadmill walk 4mi @ 13:38 per mi
Notes: Was pretty tired from the long day yesterday, but still got a pretty good walk in tonight.  I feel a lack of confidence right now that seems odd.

Wednesday
REST
Notes: I really wasn't feeling 100% today - I've just been busy and it's worn me down a bit for sure.

Thursday
REST
Notes: Another sort of yucky kind of day.  Fell asleep on the couch after having lunch - guess my body was trying to tell me it is tired :).

Friday
PM Workout:  Treadmill walk 3.08mi @ 13:38 per mi
Notes: I was hoping to get more miles in than this, but I just wasn't feeling enough energy to keep going today.  At least I got a few miles in.

Saturday
PM Workout:  Treadmill walk 6.51mi @ 14:32 per mi
Notes: This was not exactly where I wanted to end the year.  I was way lower on miles this month than I had wanted, but I have to accept what I did and didn't do and call it a year.

Sunday
AM Workout:  New Year's Day 5K - .59mi warm up walk, 3.10mi @ 13:26 per mi, .18mi cool down walk
Notes: Fifth consecutive year that I've participated in the New Year's Day 5K.  It was a beautiful morning and a familiar course and while I didn't push too hard I did better my time from last year by just a little bit.

Weekly Numbers:
Weight Watch: +6.2 pounds

Run/Walk Miles: 17.46
Bike Miles: 0.0
Elliptical Miles: 0.0
TOTAL MILES: 17.46

Pilates: MISSED
Strength: MISSED
Incline: MISSED

Monthly Numbers
Run/Walk Miles: 3.87
Bike Miles: 0.0
Elliptical Miles: 0.0
TOTAL MILES: 3.87

Goofy's Weekly Training Challenge Results
Pretty low week in terms of miles again this week.  I just have been fighting some tiredness.

There was nothing good about food this week.  No, excuses, I deserve that number on the scale this week.  I have just not been doing well in terms of food the last month or so.

We have now completed 2011 and moved in to 2012.  It promises to be an exciting year in terms of training and races and I hope that I can stick to my plans again this year!  Happy New Year, happy training and good luck with all your plans and goals!!!

New Year's Day 5K

Happy New Year!

Today marked the fifth consecutive year that I've participated in the New Year's Day 5K. This was the seventh annual New Year's Day 5K and it's amazing how much it has grown over the years.

I got myself ready to go and headed out at about 7:35am. Thankfully it is not an early race since I didn't get as much sleep as I would have liked. It was a quick and easy drive to the race site at Papago Park which is right by the Phoenix Zoo.

It was super mild weather this morning. It was about 45 degrees when I arrived - warm enough that it didn't even matter that I forgot my gloves on the counter at home.

I walked right up to collect my bib and t-shirt and then headed back to the car to wait until closer to race start time to warm up the legs.

Last year I did this race in 42:57 so I wanted to try to do better today if I could.  I brought the interval timer and figured I'd try doing a 2 minute run/1minute walk.

About 15 minutes before race start I headed out and got in a nice half mile warm up walk to get the blood flowing.  I found a place at the back of the crowd and waited to start.

Then it was time to start.  I started out doing my run/walk intervals, but the legs were still a bit stiff and not really ready to run so I did a fast walk for a while until I just felt like I should run.  I loosely followed my run/walk intervals for a while and then walked for a bit.  Finally about a quarter mile from the finish I decided to jog the rest of the way in.  I felt pretty good overall and I didn't pay much attention to me time at all.  I didn't try to go very fast since I have some important races coming up next week :).

My Garmin showed 3.10 miles in 41:38 and the official race time showed 42:07....Certainly not my fastest race ever, but it sure felt good to get some jogging in there and according to the Garmin I kept a 13:26 per mile pace and that's about where I've been doing training.

After the race I grabbed a cup of water and headed to the car. The weather was pretty beautiful today so I wasn't overheated or too cold which was nice.

Overall I had a good time with over 350 other folks out there starting the New Year with a nice 5K.  I think it was a great start to the New Year and speaks well of things to come!

Why am I looking forward to the Walt Disney World Half Marathon?
It's an early morning start, very, very early.  The race has a 5:30am start time, which means you end up getting up and getting ready in the very wee hours of the morning.  It can take a bit to get up and get going so you have to give yourself some time to wake up.

Once you head out, you're on your way to the start line over at Epcot.  Chances are you'll mill around and meet up with folks in the family reunion area and chat until you're finally called to the corrals.

The corrals are over a quarter of a mile walk away from the family reunion area, be prepared for a slow trudge as everyone heads off to find their place in the sea of participants.  Don't get overwhelmed by the number of people, you're all here for the same reason - one magical race!

Depending on what corral you're in, you might have quite wait until you actually get to start running.  Some folks will plant their behinds on the pavement to wait, others will stretch the whole time, still others will jog in place or try to get some warm up running in.  I personally just try to relax, maybe chat with some folks around me - whatever works to pass the time.

Now your corral is moving forward towards the start line and nerves start to set in.  You're about to start this 13.1 mile journey.  The announcers will get you fired up and ready to do.  Get yourself mentally and physically ready to go because it's about to begin!

You cross the start line and the timing mats and it's official, you're on your way.  There's quite a lot of road time coming up first so settle in to your pace and find your comfy zone.  Keep your eyes open for characters on the side of the course - if you're not worried about your pace or are fast enough to make up time, hop in line and get your picture taken with them!

Mile 5 and you're almost to the Contemporary - yes, this is a hill and yes you have to do it.  Don't fear the hill, it's just more pavement and every step gets you one step closer to the finish line.  Be prepared for the bottleneck that can occur here, it can be pretty crowded along this stretch.

The best part of the course is coming up - the Magic Kingdom.  You'll enter the park and before you know it you'll be running down Main Street to the cheers of the crowd.  Head around through Tomorrowland and then you're on your way to run through the Castle.  Smile big and make sure that you find those photographers so that you can get a couple of good shots as you come through the Castle!

Continue on through the Magic Kingdom and and you'll be exiting the park.  You'll go past the Grand Floridian and Polynesian and you realize that you're over half way done.  Take a moment to be thrilled about how far you've come and then keep on going.

It's a bit of a long stretch now as you head back along the roads to Epcot and the finish line.  Be prepared for some craziness in the form of on ramps - yes, they are banked and hard on the body.  Try to stay on the flattest part of them to prevent soreness from the unevenness.

Finally you reach the Epcot parking lot and all of a sudden you're in World Showcase running around the countries.  Through Future World to head back out of the park.

The finish line is less than a quarter of a mile away.  Get ready, you're about to finish this awesome race and get that commemorative medal.  Here it is, the final stretch to the finish line.  Smile big and throw your arms in the air - it's here, you're done.  Get ready, there on the side of the finish line is Mickey and Minnie - make sure you give them a nice big high five.

Now you continue forward and finally you get to the volunteers with the medals and now there's one being places around your neck.  Yes, you finished the WDW Half Marathon!

There are so many memorable moments along the course, you'll be glowing and talking it about it for the next week or more.  Enjoy your accomplishment, wear your medal with pride and know that you're a half marathoner!!!!
