Change is a Good Thing Right?

After almost 9.5 years I found out today that I am being laid off.  I have no definite end date, but they'll let me know six months before my end date.  This is all a result of acquisitions and sales and I'm not supposed to take it personally - yeah right.
At this point I have no idea what I'm going to do, but I know that I'll have to do whatever I can to ensure my financial security.  This would be one of those times where it's very difficult to be a single income household.

I think I may even consider doing a relocation if the job is right, so feel free to leave me a comment and let me know how the job market is where you live :)!

I'm sorry to hear this is happening to you. I suppose it is good that you're at least supposed to have some advance notice and can begin to prepare. Change like this is usually unsettling but often leads to much better things.

I do have a few friends who work in the same line of work as you and I would be happy to forward a copy of your resume on to them on your behalf.

Perhaps it would be time to look into seeing whether there are any openings at Disney that would work for you as a career track.

oh no - so sorry to hear it. At least they are going to give you some notice and not just escorting you to the door with your box. I like Richard's idea - you clearly know all things Disney, you should check out that avenue. A whole new career!

What do you do for a living? I have been laid off 4 times in the last 12 years, so I know what you are going through. The last time was last April and I had 4 job offers within 2 weeks, so I can say without a doubt that the tech job market is good here in the Raleigh-Durham, NC area. It's also a great run/walk area. The Galloway training program here is the largest in the country, at over 500 members, and pace groups from 7mm to 15mm. We are a short 9 hour drive or 1.5 hour flight from WDW, too! :)

Hi there! WOW! It sounds like life is forcing you to make some changes. I once heard a therapist say "discontent is a good thing - it forces us to change". sounds like some big changes are in order - maybe even a location change? Cool! It's great that you're open to new options! I'd recommend checking for states that DON'T have income tax. Washington, Texas, etc. I took my job with me when I moved, but I'd be glad to have a work out buddy in WA if you end up up here! I'm sure Jonathon would appreciate it too!

Wow. That's rough. But I'll agree with others in saying at least you have gotten notice and have time to look. You know the saying about "closing a door, opening a window..." (paraphrasing). I'm sure that this will be one of those opportunities. Good luck!!!

Holy cow! I am so sorry to hear this news, Amanda. Good thoughts and prayers are coming your way. As far as the job market here, it all depends on the field that you are in, I suppose. IT stuff seems to be fairly stable, but I'm not sure how easy it is to get a job in that aspect.
