March 2012 Wrap Up

Weight Watch: +2.6 pounds
I am at a bit of a loss right now.  I did much better this month, but I'm not seeing any positive results.  I guess I'm going to have to revamp things again.  Time to start looking at different options again to see what might fit in to my life and wants.

Mileage Watch:
Run/Walk: 80.72 miles
Bike: 40.0 miles
Elliptical: 2.13 miles
Total Miles: 122.85 miles

Goal Review
I did not end up meeting the goals that I set for myself at the beginning of the year. I didn't run/walk 100+ miles and I didn't get a 20+ mile run in, but I did increase my mileage and I've been better at adding in ab work and Pilates. So, I could beat myself up or remember just how much more I did this month than last month. I need to remember that I have to rebuild from the first two months and that everything isn't going to just magically feel wonderful because I want it to. I know I have to put in the hard work to get where I want to go.

April 2012
I do feel better that I'm working on things that I had neglected or was unable to do the first two months of the year.  I am back to doing my incline workouts, Pilates and ab work.  I've started upping the incline on the treadmill on all walks - the goal here is to make walking at 2% incline comfortable as that more closely resembles being outside.  I am also going to stop being afraid to run and get back to intervals or some form of actual running instead of just walking and fast walking.

I feel like I have to reboot on the food front again.  The method I'm using is doing nothing but making me frustrated.  I tend to be hungry more often than not - some of this is due to the increase in activity, but I think it may have to do with the quality or lack of quality in the food I'm choosing.  I will be doing some research in to other methods so I can see if something else would fit my life better.

It's so hard to believe that it's April already.  Things started looking up in March and I certainly hope to continue that trend in April.

Weekly Review: Mar 19 - 25

Goals for workouts this year:
1. 100-125 miles run/walk per month
2. One 20+ mile run/walk per month
3. One day of Pilates per week
4. One day of Strength Training per week
5. One day of Bike or Elliptical per week
6. One Incline Workout on the Treadmill per week

Here's this week's recap
Monday
PM Workout:  20 Minute Pilates Circle Workout
Treadmill walk 3mi @ 14:38 per mi
Notes:  Got in a nice beginning Pilates workout, then jumped on the treadmill for a nice walk.  Not too sore after the weekend's miles so that's good.

Tuesday
PM Workout:  Treadmill walk 4.25mi @ 14:38 per mi @ 1.5% incline
Notes:  Got a great walk in on the workout, legs are feeling good.

Wednesday
PM Workout:  AbRipperX
Treadmill walk - 3.37mi @ 14:38 per mi
Notes:  More ab pain - great.  Wasn't feeling super tonight, but happy with workout I did.

Thursday
PM Workout:  Treadmill Incline Workout #3 - 2.01mi, 30 minutes, up to 4.9mph, up to 10% incline
Elliptical - 1.08mi, 30 minutes, random ramp from 10% - 40%
Notes:  Incline workout was a bit of a killer again tonight.  Elliptical was a bit painful too.

Friday
REST
Notes:  Took a rest day today.  I'm just really tired and stressed and figured a break would be a good idea.

Saturday
REST
Notes: Had a bit of a mental breakdown today.  Frustration hit me really hard.  I feel like I'm doing what I should with the eating, I'm working out, but the scale and feeling in clothing isn't changing.

Sunday
REST
Notes:  Still struggling mentally today.  I just don't have the energy to get miles in today.  I know that isn't going to help my situation, but I'll work on it.

Weekly Numbers:
Weight Watch: +1.6 pounds
Well that's about a unwanted as another hole in my head.  This really hit me this week.  I don't want to be going up, I want to be going down.  It's hard not to get down when you see results like this.

Run/Walk Miles: 312.63
Bike Miles: 0.0
Elliptical Miles: 1.08
TOTAL MILES: 13.71

Pilates: 1 20 Minute Circle Workout
Strength: 1 Ab Workout
Incline: 1 30 Minute Incline Workout

Monthly Numbers
Run/Walk Miles: 60.36
Bike Miles: 20.0
Elliptical Miles: 2.13
TOTAL MILES: 82.49

Training Notes
The beginning of the week was pretty successful.  It was the end of the week that really threw me for a loop.  I just got really frustrated and unhappy with my lack of progress.  I know it's normal and I'll get past it.

I did pretty well with food this week, until my breakdown over the weekend.  I know I did some damage there.  I'm doing my best to stay on track here, but I'm finding it very difficult right now.  I know I just have to stay with it though.

I know I just have to keep believing I can do it and things will come together.  What are your stumbling blocks and how do you get past them?

Weekly Review: Mar 12 - 18

Goals for workouts this year:
1. 100-125 miles run/walk per month
2. One 20+ mile run/walk per month
3. One day of Pilates per week
4. One day of Strength Training per week
5. One day of Bike or Elliptical per week
6. One Incline Workout on the Treadmill per week

Here's this week's recap
Monday
PM Workout:  AbRipperX
Treadmill walk 4mi @ 15:00 per mi at 1% incline
Notes:  Okay, I knew AbRipperX was going to be bad, but darn did that just about wear me out.  Definitely have some work to do there.  Got an okay walk in on the treadmill tonight.

Tuesday
PM Workout:  Treadmill walk 3.5mi @ 14:38 per mi
Notes:  Another good walk on the treadmill.  Abs are pretty sore from yesterday's workout.

Wednesday
PM Workout:  Treadmill run/walk - 5mi @ 14:36 per mi
Notes:  I certainly cannot claim to be fast.  I kept wanting to quit, but I stuck it out and put the miles in.  I'm pretty sore - it's a good sore though.

Thursday
PM Workout:  Treadmill Incline Workout #2 - 1.87mi, 30 minutes, up to 4.9mph, up to 10% incline
PM Workout:  Bike - 10mi, 43 minutes, 13.9mph avg, resistance level 2
Notes:  These incline workouts are killers - there's a lot more running than I'm used to and a lot faster.  I just do what I can and adjust down as needed.  Got a good pedal in tonight as well.  I am noticing that I'm really tired right now - it's tough getting back to my routine!

Friday
REST
Notes:  It was not my intention to take tonight off, but I am tired and fell asleep on the couch when I got home from work.

Saturday
AM Workout:  Walk 15.10mi @ 14:56 per mi
AM Workout:  Treadmill walk 1mi @ 15:00 per mi
Notes: Set out to do 20 miles today, but I just didn't quite make it.  I did 15.10mi outside with a pretty consistent pace.  I didn't do any running.  The weather was cloudy and very windy - went in to the wind for the first half of the miles.  Thank goodness for lots of water fountains as it was still pretty warm out and I had to stop and drink and refill my handheld bottle a few times.  I also did something I haven't done in years - I wore my headphones.  It helped to keep my mind occupied since I knew I'd be out there for a long time.  I got back home and I had hoped that I could finish up the 20 miles, but after a mile on the treadmill I'd had more than enough and called it a day - 16.10 miles would have to do.

Sunday
REST
Notes:  The body is only a little sore from yesterday, but I've been feeling a little off so I decided not to push.

Weekly Numbers:
Weight Watch: -4.8 pounds
I'm not upset with this number, but I know that most of this is probably water weight.  I will continue to do what I can.

Run/Walk Miles: 30.47
Bike Miles: 10.0
Elliptical Miles: 0.0
TOTAL MILES: 40.47

Pilates: MISSED
Strength: 1 Ab Workout
Incline: 1 30 Minute Incline Workout

Monthly Numbers
Run/Walk Miles: 47.73
Bike Miles: 20.0
Elliptical Miles: 1.05
TOTAL MILES: 68.78

Training Notes
This week wasn't so bad.  I am still finding I have some limitations on my endurance and strength, but I think that's to be expected considering how bad the last couple of months have been.  I feel like I'm getting back in to a routine and hopefully it will become easier as I do.

I still find that I'm having trouble getting back to running.  I go back and forth between wanting to do run/walk intervals and doing a more natural run/walk routine.  Then I think I still have that fear of injury and maybe even failure.  It's something that I just have to keep working on and I'm sure I'll get past it at some point.

I did really well with food this week.  I continued to track everything I consume and planning out meals while accounting for workouts.  I had one day that wasn't perfect - I have an issue with the day after long runs - I'm always starving on the day after so I went a bit over what I should have.  Overall I'm very happy with how I've done this week and I hope that food combined with exercise will help the number on the scale next week, but I expect that the loss will probably be slower this week.

Hope everyone had  good St. Patrick's Day if you celebrate (hopefully you didn't over do it).  Any races coming up or new training you want to share?  Leave me a comment!

Weekly Review: Mar 5 - 11

Goals for workouts this year:
1. 100-125 miles run/walk per month
2. One 20+ mile run/walk per month
3. One day of Pilates per week
4. One day of Strength Training per week
5. One day of Bike or Elliptical per week
6. One Incline Workout on the Treadmill per week

Here's this week's recap
Monday
PM Workout:  Treadmill - 4.31mi, .31mi warm up walk, 2.04mi @ 14:16 per mi, .46mi walk, .78mi @ 14:43 per mi, .72mi cool down walk
Notes:  I couldn't run as much as I wanted to tonight, but I did what I could and got some miles in.  I am feeling stiff and sore right now and I know that's to be expected.

Tuesday
REST
Notes:  So tired that I fell asleep on the couch as soon as I got home from work.

Wednesday
PM Workout:  Treadmill - 2.51mi, .30mi warm up walk, 2mi @ 14:59 per mi, .21mi cool down walk
Notes:  It was a tough work out tonight.  I am feeling the time off more than just physically.  I'm feeling it mentally, in a lack of confidence, endurance and strength.  I have a long way to go again.

Thursday
PM Workout:  Treadmill Incline Workout #1 - 1.84mi, 30 minutes, up to 4.8mph, up to 10% incline
PM Workout:  Elliptical - 1.05mi,  30 minutes, resistance level 1, ramp 10%
PM Workout:  Bike - 10mi, 47 minutes, 12.8mph avg, resistance level 1
Notes:  I couldn't let the bad feelings from the day before get me so down.  I started with a killer incline workout on the treadmill - there was way more running than I'm used to and at an incline that I'm not used to either.  Then I jumped on the elliptical and that just made my legs in to jelly.  Finally I ended up with a nice ride on the stationary bike to round out the day.  I was super tired and sore by the time I was all done with this and I loved it!

Friday
PM Workout:  Treadmill 4.3mi walk @ 15:00 per mi
Notes:  Got in a good walk on the treadmill tonight.  Nothing fancy, but just good consistent movement.

Saturday
REST
Notes: I did absolutely nothing today.

Sunday
AM Workout:  Walk 2.27mi @ 15:36 per mi
AM Workout:  Treadmill walk 2.03mi @ 15:00 per mi
Notes:  Took the dogs out for a nice walk this morning - poor babies are as out of shape as I am.  Finished up with a couple more miles on the treadmill.

Weekly Numbers:
Weight Watch: +5.8 pounds
Yeah, there's nothing good about that number, but I'm getting back on track and hopefully these numbers will just get better going forward.

Run/Walk Miles: 17.26
Bike Miles: 10.0
Elliptical Miles: 1.05
TOTAL MILES: 28.31

Pilates: MISSED
Strength: MISSED
Incline: 1 30 Minute Incline Workout

Monthly Numbers
Run/Walk Miles: 17.26
Bike Miles: 10.0
Elliptical Miles: 1.05
TOTAL MILES: 28.31

Training Notes
This week isn't quite as good as I wanted it to be, but it's a heck of a lot better than it's been in the last couple of months.  I know that I have a lot of work to do and I'm finally ready to do it again.

I did pretty well with food this week.  I returned to tracking everything I consume and planning out meals while accounting for workouts.  I had one day that wasn't perfect, but overall I'm very happy with how I've done this week and I hope that food combined with exercise will help the number on the scale next week.

It feels good to be back in a place where I can start putting in the time and doing what I need to do again.  How's your March going?

2012 Princess Half Trip Report - February 26, 2012 Part 2

At 10:30am I got on the normal Epcot to resort bus.  I'm feeling pretty good at this point.  I am back in my room at 10:45am.  I had some snacks and drank some water and Powerade, got cleaned up and decided to relax for a while.  At 1:45pm I decided that I really needed a nap.  I know most people will tell you never to do this after a race, but it doesn't really bother me as I have a tendency to do this at home so I'm used to it.

I dozed off an on while watching TV and then at 4:00pm decided I should think about getting moving.  I headed to the bus at about 4:55pm.  I am noticing that my knees are a little sore on stairs and I'm tired but other than that feeling pretty darn good.  While waiting for the bus a family was having a major panic attack about making a reservation at the Magic Kingdom.  They were so sure that the bus would be so slow that they decided to take a taxi right as the bus pulled up.  I got on the bus to the Magic Kingdom.  On the way, I saw five deer grazing in the grass by the side of the road right before the Contemporary Hill.

As I am walking up to bag check, guess who I see right in front of me.  Yep, the family that decided to pay for a taxi got there at the same exact time that I did and I didn't pay a penny.  Oh the uninformed and high strung vacationer - you have to love their antics!  I was in the park at 5:30pm.

Pirates of the Caribbean was first up.  It's listed as a 10 minute wait, but it was pretty much a walk on.  Of course I manage to get pretty wet from a rogue cannon blast - blech!  I probably go to Disney parks too often because I am noticing when things aren't quite right.  The fight that happens at the fort - the one where the shadows are fighting were off today.  For some reason I always like watching this fight and listening to the sounds - well at least I got to listen to the sounds.  Then Carlos's wife didn't open the window and look out when she told Carlos - don't be chicken Carlos.

The Haunted Mansion was calling my name.  It was a walk on and I have to say that walking felt really darn good.  I love the hitch hiking ghost enhancements - my head was taken off and blown up as a balloon - that is some great technology there!

I walked on It's a Small World - I was a bit sad because there were some things not working.  One of the carousels in the white room was one of the bigger things I noticed.

Next I headed over to Mickey's Philharmagic.  This is my all time favorite 3D movie.  I just love it - the 3D is great and it's fun seeing all the characters.

Took a quick bio break at 7:00pm and then walked right on Carousel of Progress.  I know that a lot of people would like to see improvements and changes to this attraction, but I love it.  I thoroughly enjoy all the scenes - even the cheesy last scene.

I figured it was a good time to head to the Tomorrowland Transit Authority (Peoplemover).  I got over there and the ride was stopped and no one was going on or coming off, but it was getting ready to come back up so I waited.  Ah, a nice relaxing place to put my feet up and take a break.

Shopping was next on my list - I was starting to wear out and figured I'd see what things I couldn't live without.  As I was walking to the Emporium, The Magic, Memories and You! show was going on.  Now, I'm not one to line up and watch parades and things (except the Boo to You Parade), but I actually had to take my time walking through this area because that is some really cool projection.  I was thoroughly impressed with the clarity of the images and the imagination of the themes projected.  Very nice indeed.

I walked through the Emporium, but decided that I really wanted to head out before Wishes got rolling and certainly before it ended.  I headed out to the buses and was on the bus at 8:05pm.  There was a woman next to me on the bus that volunteers at all of the runDisney events and has been doing it for years.  She happened to be the woman with the bullhorn at the booths heading in to Magic Kingdom.  Even though she was standing there warning people to be careful there were still five people that fell going over those speed bumps.

She had some really great stories.  Remember the monsoon at the Expedition Everest Challenge?  Well, if you've wondered why runDisney went to clear plastic bags for bag check - one of the reasons is that many people ended up with ruined items because the checked bags were placed on the ground and the water destroyed a lot of them.  The checked bags are no longer left on the floor as you may have noticed going through bag check tents that bags are on tables - that was another improvement.  Another reason they went to the clear bags is so that people think about what they put in them.  We chatted for quite a while and then walked in to Jambo House together.  Such interesting stories - I could have talked to her for hours :).

I found some items I'd been wanting to get in January so I was happy, but I was also starving.  I was going to get dinner at the Magic Kingdom but all the places I wanted to go were pretty busy.  I decided to head over to the Mara to grab some food.  I really like the Mara, there are some great options on the menu, but all I really wanted were some chicken strips and a burger so that's what I got.

It was a pretty nice night out and I decided to walk back to Kidani Village.  It's a nice easy walk and I was back in my room about 10 after 9.  I ate my dinner, packed up most of my stuff, relaxed and watched some TV.

At 10:50pm I decided it was time for bed, it was a long successful day and I figured I'd be sleeping pretty well!

2012 Princes Half Trip Report - February 26, 2012 Part 1 (LONG)

Alarm one went off at 2:00am and alarm two followed quickly at 2:10am.  I got up, ate my Powerbar and got ready and geared up.  I headed out to the bus at 2:40am and was on board about 10 minutes later and we headed off at 2:55am.  Yes, if you're going to do a morning runDisney event it will be a very early start.

The bus arrived at 3:09am and I was surprised at how far out they dropped us off - it's the furthest out I've ever been dropped off before.  So it was a lengthy trek to the staging area, but I was okay with that.  Once I got in to the staging area I headed straight for a bio break.  Then I headed over to the T - Z family reunion tent to wait for Jonathan to arrive.

So, I had some time to think last night and frankly I was worrying about Jonathan finishing this race.  I know he's had some trouble with the last few races, but I also knew that he can do it, he's done it before and he needs to get back to that place.  I really wanted to make sure that he crossed the finish line this time.  I knew that I could help him finish if he was willing to put up with me.  I made the decision to talk to him as soon as I saw him and find out if he wanted help for this race.

Jonathan showed up and I skipped the niceties and went straight to the heart of the matter.  Yes, when I get my mind around something I jump right to it.  I asked him how bad he wanted this today.  He said he really wanted it.  I asked him if he wanted helped getting it.  He hesitated for a moment and said that he wanted me to run my race, but I said that I was more than prepared to help him through this race and that I could get him across the finish line.  He said okay in a hesitant sort of way.  Then I sprung the rules on him - oh yes, I had some rules.  There'd be no negativity, there would be no quiting no matter what, cramps, pain, aches - nope they don't exist.  Even if I had to push and/or drag him across the finish line I'd get him across the line and as close to 3:30 as I could.  He agreed - okay I have a run/walk partner for the race!

As we waited to head to the corrals we chatted with the WDW Radio Running Team folks.  It was funny because one of the ladies recognized me from the bus to the expo as we had chatted a bit before the bus showed up - Hi May :)!  Everyone on that team is very friendly and welcoming and I enjoyed chatting with them.

Then it was time for me to lay out the plan for the race to Jonathan.  Now, you know I've had my health struggles this year so I've had plenty of practice getting through races when it didn't always seem possible so of course I knew I could employee some of these tricks today.  The plan was for us to run at least some distance at every mile marker - I didn't care if it was 10 seconds or 10 minutes, but we would run so that we could help build a buffer.  Jonathan would be responsible for setting the run pace and amount of time we would run based on how he was feeling.  I would take responsibility for setting the walk pace and pushing when we needed to speed it up.  There would be no sweepers hunting us today.

At 4:26am we headed for the corrals.  As we made the slow walk we came across short lines at the second set of portapotties so we hopped in line for a bio break.  As I was waiting for Jonathan I watched a lady take a header right over one of those orange cones.  I really hate those cones in the middle of the road, I know I've tripped over them and I've watched others trip over them and this woman's fall could have been really bad.  Thankfully she was not seriously injured, but she was scraped up and pretty shaken up by the whole event and I can totally understand why.

I was in corral D, but I dropped back to corral E with Jonathan.  We entered the corral at 5:10am and were able to make our way all the way to the front of the corral.  I could tell that Jonathan didn't think he could do this and was a bit nervous and wanted as much buffer as he could get.  I was okay with that, but it gave me pause.  Could I do this, could I actually get us both across the finish line?  Would we flirt with the sweepers?  What if I couldn't help him do this?  How much would he hate me by the end of the race (I wasn't planning on being easy on him)?  I took this responsibility seriously.  I had helped my friend do her first half marathon without training, but could I do it again?  I'm sure I got a little quiet at this point, but I noticed that Jonathan was pretty quiet as well.  I'm sure he was worried about how hard I'd be on him, whether he could do it, etc...I think most people have some of these thoughts before a race - it's a challenge and anything can happen during a race.

They had a great sound system and screen up so we could see everything going on and they had the usual announcers and entertainment to keep everyone pumped and ready to go.  Finally it was time for the singing of the National Anthem at 5:30am.  Van Dobbins (I think that was his name) was the singer and he was amazing - beautiful voice.  There are between 19,000 and 20,000 runners registered for the race today as compared to the 8,000 that ran the first Princess Half (I was one of those runners).  There was a solo wheelchair athlete that was sent off to some great fireworks and then we had fireworks set off for each of the corrals as they were sent off.
Photobucket
It was about 6:10am when it was finally our turn to go.  I let Jonathan set the pace as we started off at a light jog to warm up and get moving.  It was a bit chilly as we waited, but it felt good to get moving.  About 10 minutes in we took a quick break so Jonathan could commune with nature.  I'm not used to this, but I knew we'd be okay in terms of time.

Miles one and two went by pretty well and we were maintaining an okay pace.  It was just starting to get light out and we made a stop to get Jonathan's shoe laces adjusted correctly.  Then sadly at mile three there was a runner on a stretcher being attended to - I hate seeing this on the course it's just heartbreaking.  I think around here there was an amazing character stop with a whole bunch of the lead male characters - there were at least four or five of them maybe more.

I don't remember all the characters that were out and where, but I'll sprinkle in the photos included with my Brightroom order around where I think they might have been (I thought this was a cool addition for this race photo package and hope they continue the practice since I'm too slow to stop and take pictures).

We continued our run at each mile marker - Jonathan was in charge of these and so far he was doing really well.  After mile three there was no leg pain and no side stitches.  I was a little worried when he said he was tired so I started to push a little bit and told him he's not allowed to think like that - tiredness is a state of mind today and if you tell yourself you're not tired you won't be.  I was using my Lifesavers and sips of water at each mile as usual and they were serving me well.  I was a bit concerned because Jonathan didn't have any fuel with him and he's never used Powerade so that's not a good idea to try it on the course - yikes.

There's mile four and we're going under the Magic Kingdom sign and past the speed bumps and there's a lady right in the middle with a bullhorn warning everyone about the speed bumps - loud for sure.
Photobucket
We're continuing on our way and right as we get to the crowded stretch right before the Contemporary hill I feel something hit my back, but I didn't really pay much attention and then it happened again.  I turned and it was De'Dee  - they had caught up with us.  It was awesome to see her out on the course.  Jonathan handled the hill pretty well, but I can tell it was a bit rough on him.
Photobucket
Photobucket
I'm feeling pretty good at this point.  I'm a little stiff in the hips and the knees are a little sore, but pretty normal stuff for me.  I'm tuned in to Jonathan and I can tell by his breathing whether I can push the walk a little bit or if I need to ease up.  I'm trying to encourage him, provide tips about random things I've learned while doing races and to just keep him moving.  He's doing the hard part, I'm just there to make sure he keeps doing it.

We pass mile five and we're doing okay with time.  There are still lots of folks behind us and still no sign of the sweepers.  Here comes the fun part - we're heading in to the Magic Kingdom.  The WDW Radio Team is right there at the start of Main Street and they cheer Jonathan on as we pass.  No matter how many races I do, it's still completely amazing to head down Main Street - I love the energy from the spectators and the volunteers and the Cast Members!  We head through Tomorrowland and  Fantasyland.

No, I didn't see all of these characters, but aren't they fun photos?  I did see the White Rabbit, one of the Tweedles, and the Mad Hatter though.  We're coming up on the castle now and Minnie is out by her self, and the trumpeters are out on the balcony.

Now we head through the Castle.

Then it's on to Frontierland.
2012 PH
After Frontierland we are headed backstage.  I always love going by the train and there's a female engineer out in front of the train - now that's cool and not something I've seen very often!

We are now by mile six.  This is a fabulous thing.  That means we passed the point that Jonathan was picked up in January.  He's maintaining the run at each mile marker and this helps keep a good buffer of time.  After we exit the backstage area De'Dee passes us once again - apparently there was a bio break in there somewhere!

Over half way there.  Mile seven goes by and we're in that cramped and crowded area by the Grand Floridian.
Photobucket
How cool were Belle, Beast and Gaston?  I loved that it was the three of them.
Photobucket
Golfer Goofy all by himself.  Oh my, they had the Wedding Singer out today and I couldn't resist having a little fun with him singing Love and Marriage on the way by - I haven't seen him since the 2010 WDW Half and I won't be too sad if I have to wait another couple of years :).

We're past the Grand Floridian, then the Polynesian.  I'm noticing that I'm having to push Jonathan a bit more in the walk sections as he's slowing a bit and I am sure no fuel has something to do with that.  Here comes the Speedway and Pocahontas is all by herself.
Photobucket
Mile eight and we're still going.  Jonathan grabs a gel - yeah!  I can tell that Jonathan is really starting to tire out and my pushing is annoying him more and more.  There's a little more snap and a little less laugh in his responses.  I'm perfectly okay with this, I warned him it would happen and I'm prepared for it.

The mile nine marker and we still get a short run in, the run segments are getting shorter, but I'm so proud of Jonathan for continuing to do them.  We trudge along World Drive and I try to keep any eye on the folks behind us and for the sweepers - still no sight of them.
Photobucket
Photobucket
I'm feeling pretty good still - I'm having just a little trouble doing the slower run segments, but I want Jonathan to keep setting that pace and keeping comfortable so I can manage whatever pace he sets.  Mile nine is gone and here comes the mile 10 marker - yes, we've hit double digits.

Mile 10 is another milestone as this is where Jonathan got picked up in January 2010.  It also means that we only have a 5K to go.  I remind Jonathan that he can do a 5K any time, any day, any where - I believe he said yeah, but can I do four in a row?  Of course you can!  Jonathan is going on will power now - I know his feet hurt and there are hot spots, he's having to stretch the side out a little more here and there and I have to keep him moving a little quicker as I can.  This is where it gets tougher for me.  At this point I have energy to spare - in my normal plan this is where I would be doing more running.  It's also where I get annoyingly happy because I know the end is really coming.  So, I have to balance my desire to get going and his need for me to just keep him moving.

The on ramp, clover leaf, banked horrible area is here and it's begun to rain on us.  Not terrible rain, just enough to get you wet and it sort of feels good at this point, but I do hope it doesn't become a downpour.  I suppose I should mention that it's perfect race weather.  There's been a slight breeze, it's cool but not cold, totally cloudy and not that humid.  I couldn't have asked for better weather for the day as I know it's helping in our success.  If the sun would have been blaring down on us it would have been much more uncomfortable.

In addition to perfect weather, the other racers are amazing as well.  We've had some great conversations with some really nice ladies on the course.  There are inspirational shirts and great costumes on the course today.

As we reach the top of the on ramp Jonathan needs a quick stop to adjust the shoelaces and thankfully it was a quick stop.  We are on the overpass now and it is comforting to see a large number of runners behind us - that means we're still okay on time.  This is important because I know our pace has slowed, but there are still no sweeper sightings.
Photobucket
Here comes mile 11 - we're doing this.  I am so proud of Jonathan already, but he does another nice run segment, it's shorter but still happening.  As we finish that run segment I have to apologize because I realized that we were doing my pace not his - oops!  One last stinky hill and we're getting ready to head in to the Epcot parking lot.
Photobucket
Photobucket
Right before we head in to Epcot the WDW Radio Team is there and the cheers for Jonathan are astounding.  I know that this was a huge boost for him.  We pass mile 12.  I keep urging Jonathan on, he is so ready to be done, but he's still going.  Here's Future World.
Photobucket
No, the Fairy Godmother was not out, there was some very loud and annoying lady in a pink ball gown and tiara out there - no idea who she was. If you know who she was, please leave me a comment.
Photobucket
Photobucket
We head back around towards Spaceship Earth and thankfully we still see quite a few people behind us.  I keep pushing Jonathan to stay next to me, not behind me.  We're heading backstage and we're so close now.  The Gospel Choir is out - I thought they were awesome and amazing, so friendly and excited to be there.

We head out and around the corner and there's the 13 mile marker.  I tell Jonathan to give me all he's got and we run.  We get close to the finish line and he takes off.  I was stuck behind someone, but it doesn't matter because he's done it and I'm done too!  We were slower that I wanted us to be at 3:43 (17:07 per mi) but he did it!

Right after the finish line Jonathan stopped and I can see he's having trouble breathing, but I make him start moving.  We continue forward and get our medals.  It's definitely emotional.  I didn't believe Jonathan came in to this race believing he could finish and I asked him as much.  He just shook his head no.  I told him that I knew he could do it and I knew he didn't believe it and that's why I helped him.  I also told him his Dad was watching and proud of him and that he has a wife and daughter at home that are so proud of him.  I truly hope this is a turning point for him and he realizes that you can do anything if you believe you can (and yeah, suffer a little bit for what you want).  Don't get me wrong - Jonathan did all the hard work, I was just there to make sure he did that work.  I am super proud of him for this finish because I know he more than earned it and I'm impressed!

Once we got past the emotions we headed  through and got Powerade and water.  It's raining again.  We stopped to get our finisher photos.

We went through to get our snack boxes, bananas, Toy Story gummies and Luna Bars if you wanted.  Then we walked toward Epcot and the monorail station.  We stopped at some benches so Jonathan could make a phone call home and I could return some texts.  As we are there I watch the very last walker come through.  It's an amazing procession.  There's the walker, the balloon carrier, bike medics, and people in a golf cart.  There was a crew of about a dozen people waiting to start taking down the barriers and as she came through all of them cheered her on.  I'm totally moved by this scene and actually tear up - yeah, I get more emotional for other people than myself :).  I just really want to know her story.

Once we're done with our phone calls and such we continue on through bag check and over to the monorail station.  We say our goodbyes - Jonathan heads up the monorail ramp and I head back out towards the buses.
