Happy Halloween!

If you've been reading my blog for any amount of time, you probably already know that I love Halloween.  I am always looking for unique costumes and don't mind spending a bit of money and time making my ideas come to life.  This year I decided on Medusa - when I started I wasn't sure what I would come up with.  It is not as easy finding rubber snakes as you would think - lots of web searching had to happen and lots of local stores to find everything I needed.  Then I had to paint each snake with several coats of gold or silver paint and finally each snake was attached to a wig with wire. If you are wondering - yes, it was rather heavy after all day and some of the wires did end up poking in to my scalp making it a bit uncomfortable at times!

In the end, I am super happy with my costume this year.  In fact, it was good enough to take the BEST COSTUME award at work!

The company I work for provided pumpkins for carving this year which was super cool. I had already decided to do a Jack Skellington design and it was great because when I went to get my pumpkin there was one white pumpkin - of course I snagged it. I had never carved a white pumpkin before and I will say it was not easy, the flesh was easily twice as thick as a normal pumpkin so it took extra care and time to do it.  To my surprise - I also took home the BEST PUMPKIN award!

Did you do anything fun for Halloween this year?

October 2011 Wrap Up

Weight Watch: -9.4 pounds
I am pretty happy with that number - at least it's in the right direction again.  I am not where I want to be in terms of weight, but I'm still a work in progress and I'll keep working on it until I do get to where I want to be.

Mileage Watch:
Run/Walk: 112.40 miles
Bike: 25.00 miles
Elliptical: 0.0 miles
Total Miles: 137.40 miles

While the numbers are lower than I would have liked for October, I am okay with these numbers.  I am finally in a place where I can start pushing my left knee a bit more and the legs are feeling good in general.

Goal Review
I completed the Walk for Hope in October.  There was no goals and no speed to be had in this one.  I walked this with a friend that hadn't been out walking or running since February - needless to say it was just me pushing her to keep going so it was slow.  That being said, it was a race for the month and helps keep me going with my one race per month goal for the year.

I still managed to stay well over the 80-100 run/walk miles per month goal!  Of course I would have loved to have more miles to report for October, but I still got a respectable amount of miles and managed to get my knee feeling better so that counts for a lot in my book.

November 2011
My next half marathon is on the 6th - the Women's Half Marathon.  I am not setting any lofty goals for this race.  It's going to be a test of the knee and legs in general to just see what I can do without hurting myself.  I am not setting any time goals or worrying about much of anything on this one.  I intend to just enjoy myself - I hope I can at least do that :)!

I feel for those of you that are already dealing with freezing temperatures and snow, but you can send some cool my way.  It was close to 90 today, but we are supposed to get down in to the 70's by the weekend.  Maybe now I really can start getting outside as I know I need to get off the treadmill and start pushing my mind and body to get used to the outside terrain and boredom that comes with long runs outside (I read on the treadmill so I don't get bored to easily on there).

I am still having my good days and bad days in terms of food.  This is still a big struggle area for me.  I do what I can and I keep trying to tweak things in hopes that I'll find the perfect match for my moods and metabolism.  So much easier said than done for me.

Hope everyone had a safe and happy Halloween, got good miles in during October and ready to push towards any goal races coming up!

Weekly Review: Oct 23 -30

Goals for workouts this year:
1. 80-100 miles run/walk per month
2. One day of Pilates per week
3. One day of Strength Training per week
4. One day of Bike or Elliptical per week
5. One Incline Workout on the Treadmill per week

Here's this week's recap
Monday
REST
Notes: I let the stress of work get to me and took the day off.  At least I didn't give in to food temptations.

Tuesday
REST
Notes: Yes, I slacked off again today.  It was another long day at work and took everything I had to get through it.

Wednesday
PM Workout:  Treadmill walk 6.85mi @ 14:17 per mi
Notes: Got in a great treadmill walk tonight on the mill.  Was feeling pretty good overall.

Thursday
PM Workout:  Treadmill incline workout #8 - 30mins, up to 10% incline, one long running segment at the end
Treadmill walk 2.75mi @ 14:17 per mi
Notes: Got in a killer incline workout in and then a good walk.

Friday
REST
Notes: Well, I had to go Halloween shopping tonight and then work on my costume...I wish I didn't have to get creative with my ideas - it's so time consuming, but yeah, I love it.

Saturday
AM Workout:  Treadmill walk 3.53mi @ 14:17 per mi
Notes: Haven't been feeling all that great today, just super tired.  It's been a very stressful week in terms of work and some things going on at home and I think it just caught up with me today.

Sunday
AM Workout:  Treadmill walk 7.16mi @ 13:57 per mi
Notes: I should have been doing a 26 miler today, but that just wasn't going to happen if I was going to finish my Halloween costume and carve a pumpkin for work tomorrow.  I am pleased with my Halloween stuff which I will be sure to post tomorrow.  I am pretty happy with my walk today too - I upped the speed again and it felt pretty good overall.

Goofy's Weekly Training Challenge Results
Back to no medal this week. It's just been one of those weeks where there was too much to do and no time to get it all done.

While I did do some running last week, this week was really all about the walking.  I did try to keep my pace up, but I've been afraid to re-injure my knee.  Then I ended up so stressed by work and some stuff going on that it made me just afraid to do anything.

Food was hit and miss this week.  I controlled my stress eating for the most part, but I didn't do as good as I would have liked either.

Next week is my next half marathon.  I have no expectations and no pace goals, I just want to finish.  I'm just going to try to enjoy the race and see what happens.  I definitely don't want to do anything to cause injury as I really have to focus on January and the coming challenges in 2012 as it's going to be an incredibly busy first couple of months!

I must go put the finishing touches on my Halloween costume!  Have a safe and happy Halloween and don't partake in too much candy.

Weekly Review: Oct 17 - 23

Goals for workouts this year:
1. 80-100 miles run/walk per month
2. One day of Pilates per week
3. One day of Strength Training per week
4. One day of Bike or Elliptical per week
5. One Incline Workout on the Treadmill per week

Here's this week's recap
Monday
PM Workout:  Treadmill walk 3.26mi @ 14:26 per mi
Notes: Tried to run on the mill tonight and couldn't run much.  Left knee is still not 100% but it is feeling a lot better.  Stairs weren't quite as painful today.

Tuesday
REST
Notes: Having some mental issues today.  Just feeling a bit down that I feel like I'm regressing instead of improving.  It happens and I'll work through it.

Wednesday
PM Workout:  Treadmill run/walk - 5.5mi @ 14:10 per mi
Notes: Got in a good walk and was able to do some running segments - slowly, but more than I've been able to do in a while.  The left knee was feeling better, but I had to warm it up a couple of miles before it felt normal - still, so much better than it has been.  Need to be careful and not overdo it too much though.

Thursday
PM Workout:  Treadmill incline workout #7 - 30mins, up to 8% incline, long running segments
Treadmill walk 2.25mi @ 14:17 per mi
Notes: Got in a good incline workout with some nice long running segments and the knee held up fine.  Then I got a couple of walk miles in.  All in all, not too bad of a day.

Friday
PM Workout:  Treadmill walk 3.19mi @ 14:17 per mi
Notes: Got a good walk in on the mill tonight.  No running, didn't want wear myself out before my long run.

Saturday
AM Workout:  Treadmill run/walk 13.15mi @ 14:04 per mi
Notes: I was a bit tired and shaky when I finished today but I kept up a nice fast walk and was able to do many, many running segments all the way through today.  The knee is a bit stiff now that I'm done, but felt really good the whole time.  Used Pep-O-Mint Lifesavers as fuel with water today and felt really good in terms of energy.

Sunday
AM Workout:  Treadmill run/walk 7.10mi @ 14:05 per mi
PM Workout:  Treadmill walk 3.67mi @ 15:00 per mi
Notes: It was really hard to get any running in this morning, but I did what I could.  By mile 4 I was feeling worn out.  I didn't get the miles I wanted to get, but I still feel really good because I was not sore at all this morning - yeah!  Fell a little short on miles in the first run so later on in the evening I decided to get a walk in to round out the miles.

Look at that - I got a gold medal this week.  A nice 40.16 miles this week and it felt good to get those miles in...It was actually less miles than I had planned, but I am super happy with the numbers this week as I haven't felt this good in a while.

The best part about this week?  Well, I was able to start adding running back in to the mix and my knee didn't complain.  Finally after almost two months I am able to get some running in again and man does that feel good.  This knee has been worrying me pretty good for a while and I wasn't sure it was going to get better, but now it's back to about 95% and it feels fabulous.

I had one bad day this week where I let my stress get the best of me, but overall it was quite a good week in terms of food.  This is an area that I continue to struggle with almost on a daily basis, but as long as I don't give up that's what counts.  I know the rules and want to follow them, but my cravings sometimes overrule my common sense and knowledge - I guess that's why we're human huh?

Coming up on my next half marathon and I feel better about it since my knee is feeling better.  Still feel like I have a fair amount of work to do before January.  I am re-adjusting my goals for January.  I have to come to terms with the fact that I have not worked enough on speed and that means that I'm not going to be able to cut as much time off my races as I had hoped for.  I am not bothered by this though because I'm still out there doing it and if I can do it without a minimum amount of pain that's really what matters.  I will probably never be as fast as I'd like to be - that doesn't mean I'll stop trying to get faster, but I will re-evaluate what speed means to me.

I am planning a pretty interesting costume for Halloween.  Anyone else planning anything fun?

Goofy's Weekly Training Challenge Results
Well, what a bad week in terms of miles and I didn't get any Goofy training medals this week.  I don't actually feel to bad about it though.  I did walk to and from the conference each day and there was plenty of walking around during the day.  I also think it was a really good thing to take a week to rest, my knee is still giving me some issues but it does feel better overall.

I have had a few comments asking about the knee and I am not sure right now what is the problem.  It does not hurt at all to walk and I can run after it's warmed up well.  It is almost impossible for me to go up and down stairs and kneeling is pretty painful.  I will see how this week goes after giving it last week pretty much off and if it is not feeling better I'll have the ortho check it out.

My eating was totally off track this week.  I didn't have normal meal times and that caused some overeating on my part.  I am not looking forward to stepping on the scale as I'm sure it will be pretty painful, but that's my own fault and I'll work to correct it.

I've got three weeks to my next half marathon (the Women's Half) - no expectations for this one at this point.  That might change as I get closer.  Then will be the big push to January and my second Dopey Challenge - wow, that's hard to believe :)!

Hope everyone had a great week and is looking forward to another great week!

Goals for workouts this year:
1. 80-100 miles run/walk per month
2. One day of Pilates per week
3. One day of Strength Training per week
4. One day of Bike or Elliptical per week
5. One Incline Workout on the Treadmill per week

Here's this week's recap
Monday
REST
Notes: Needed a rest day and that was not a good thing because I was starving all day.

Tuesday
PM Workout:  Treadmill walk 6.0mi @ 14:17 per mi
Notes: Got a good long walk in tonight.  Upped the speed on the mill and everything felt pretty good.  My left knee is still a bit stiff and sore and times, but it also feels better too.

Wednesday
PM Workout:  Bike - 25mi, 1hr 44mins, 14.3mph avg, resistance level 2
Notes: Got in a great bike ride tonight.  Left knee was a bit sore all day so the bike was the best option for the night.

Thursday
PM Workout:  Treadmill walk 5.25mi @ 14:17 per mi
Notes: Left knee sore all day again, but while on the treadmill it felt great.  Hoping that walking this week instead of running will give me time to heal up a bit for my weekly long run.  The new pace on the treadmill feels pretty natural so that's a big plus.

Friday
PM Workout:  Treadmill walk 5.39mi @ 14:17 per mi
Notes: Got in another great walk tonight.

Saturday
AM:  Run/Walk (a lot of walk) - 12.72mi, .3mi warm up walk, 12.01mi @ 14:16 per mi, .41mi cool down walk
Notes: Okay, I did the planned miles.  My left knee hurt for the entire first 2-3 miles before settling down.  Did okay with 2min run/1min walk intervals for the first 6 miles, but the last 6 miles was mostly walking.  It was gorgeous weather outside and was a perfect day to be out there doing the miles not on the mill.

Sunday
PM Workout: Walk - 8mi @ varied pace
Notes: Flew in to Seattle for a conference (I grew up in WA and it was the first time I had been back in about 17 years or so).  Walked all around the water front, Pike Place Market, did some hills and some stairs.  My left knee was not happy with the hills or the stairs, but it just felt so great to be outside and enjoying the view!

Got in a great week in terms of miles.  Been dealing with my left knee issues - thankfully, I can walk with no issues and running is okay once I get warmed up.

My eating was totally on track this week, no problems in that area.  I told you that the weight gain was a flaw, but most of that is back off which is what I expected. Travel will more than likely throw me off again the next time I weigh in though - it always does.

So hard to believe that we're getting so close to January - I know I'm strong, but I also know that I feel like I've fallen backwards right now.  I'm trying very hard to get over the mental issues, I think that's what's holding me back right now.

Here's to a pretty good week.  Hope everyone else had a good week!

Weekly Review: Sep 26 - Oct 2

Goals for workouts this year:
1. 80-100 miles run/walk per month
2. One day of Pilates per week
3. One day of Strength Training per week
4. One day of Bike or Elliptical per week
5. One Incline Workout on the Treadmill per week

Here's this week's recap
Monday
PM Workout: Treadmill walk 4.52mi @ 14:38 per mi
Notes: Decided to walk instead of running tonight.  Left leg super swollen today although the pain is at least diminished greatly.  Got a great walk in.

Tuesday
PM Workout:  Treadmill walk 4.20mi @ 14:38 per mi
Notes: With a migraine walking was it for me today.  My left knee is finally looking like a knee again which is a big plus.  Got in a good walk despite the headache.

Wednesday
PM Workout:  Treadmill run/walk - 4.71mi, .32mi warm up walk, 4mi @ 14:01 per mi, .39mi cool down walk
Notes: Finally my left knee is feeling better and better and the swelling is down a lot.  It's really throwing me not having my Garmin and foot pod, but the treadmill does keep track so I'm just trying to go with it.  No intervals today, just did what felt good.

Thursday
REST
Notes: It hit me that I haven't taken a day off in almost two weeks and since I was tired I decided today was a good day to rest.

Friday
PM Workout:  Treadmill walk 6.2mi @ 14:38 per mi
Bike - 23mi, 1hr 40mins, 13.7mph avg, resistance level 2
Notes: The treadmill was my friend tonight and the walk just felt really great.  Then I got a nice long bike ride in, not as long as I planned, but still good.

Saturday
AM:  Walk 8.54mi @ 15:43 per mi (including stop lights and breaks)
Notes: I headed outside this morning and again it was already hot, about 85.  I gave up the run/walk intervals after the first mile or so.  It was well over 90 when I got done and the heat was pretty rough on me.  I had hoped for 15 miles today, but I ran out of time with other things on the calendar.

Sunday
AM Workout: City of Hope 5K - 5mi, .9mi warm up walk, 3.1mi @ 17:10 per mi, 1mi cool down walk
Notes: It was 5K day today and I went with a friend that hasn't done any walking since February.  Needless to say she isn't in the best of shape for these events so it was a bit slow going today, but we enjoyed the day and since the course goes through the Phoenix Zoo we had some good views of the animals early this morning.

Another good mileage week.  I didn't get quite as many long miles in as I hoped for this weekend, but it was still a good week overall.

Still fighting some swelling and pain in the left knee, but it seems to be getting better everyday - a plus for sure.

My eating was totally on track this week, not problems in that area.  I know that the whole 11 pound weight gain is super shocking - it was to me when I stepped on the scale - but I know that most of this was due to some extreme swelling in my legs.  I have kept track this week and as the swelling went down so did the number on the scale.  Hopefully next week's number will be much better.

We are now in October and the time keeps ticking away and bringing me closer to January.  I am starting to get excited for the challenge again and I know that I have to improve my self talk while out on the road training.  My body feels fine, but my mind is not in agreement and that's just silly.

Hope you all had a good week and a great start to the month!
