Happy Halloween!

Well, it's another Halloween! This year I decided to be an evil jester. This costume earned me best spookiest costume at work on Friday. I won a $50 gift certificate to a local restaurant.

I'm feeling a bit lazy and tired right now, but I know getting back in to a routine should help me a lot.
NUTRITION
Ugh...What can I even say. I'm just not doing well here and I'm not sure how to get back on track right now. I will just keep trying and do what I can.

Dopey Training Review - Week #41

MIND CHECK
Nothing good came of this week. Nope, not one good thing...It was another rough work week and because of that I didn't take the time for me or my training. Stupid I know.
BODY CHECK
What could I complain about - I didn't do anything this week to make me have any problems.
NUTRITION
As with everything else this week. I suffered here too. I've been very bad and have no excuse here.
WORKOUT PLAN
Monday
AM: Easy run - Warm up walk, 2mi @ 14:34 per mi, cool down walk
Another 17hr work day...didn't leave me time to train today.
Tuesday
AM: Easy run - Warm up walk, 4mi @ 14:48 per mi, cool down walk
Well, it was another long day today. My Halloween costume doesn't fit and I'm a bit stressed about everything right now.
Wednesday
AM: Walk - 3mi @ no target
PM: Treadmill walk - 3.14mi @ 16:53 per mi
I was happy to be on the treadmill tonight, that is until the work phone rang and I had to stop to take care of more problems. I hope this craziness ends soon.
Thursday
AM: Easy run - Warm up walk, 4mi @ 14:48 per mi, cool down walk
And another 18hr day today...Man, I'm starting to feel rusty. I'm making bad food choices and I know these are all just excuses.
Friday
AM: Bike - 20mi no target
Today was Halloween dress up day at work. That was fun....except for the fact that it was a 19hr work day today. I'm very burnt out.
Saturday
AM: Long walk - 17mi @ 16-18 per mi
I woke up with the worst Charlie horse in my right calf. Usually if I just stretch them out as they happen, I'm perfectly fine in the morning. Well, this one was not so nice. I couldn't even walk in the morning. Lots of ice, gentle stressing and rest was the order of the day. Since I couldn't get my long run in today, I took the time to nap on the couch to catch up on some much needed sleep.
Sunday
REST
AM: Treadmill walk - 3.6mi @ 17:26 per mi
I tried to get some miles in today. In fact I was going to go for 17....It was not to be today. I was on the treadmill, walking along and I have no energy, no stamina, no motivation at all. I ended up stopping way sooner than I should have. I am very disappointed with myself today - I should have been able to do more.

That's a wrap for this week. Be on the lookout for the Dopey Training Preview post for next week's plan!

Dopey Training Preview - Week #41

MIND CHECK
Okay, it's time to ramp it up again. Not just a little ramp up this week, a pretty big ramp up. My mind is ready to attack a new long distance that I haven't done before. I'll be going for 17 miles on Saturday. I think I can do it. I might be slow, but I'm ready to give it a go!
BODY CHECK
I need to keep working on the blister situation and I have to get some of this weight off. I'm suffering because of the weight I've gained and I know that has to stop.
NUTRITION
I have stocked the house with better food for this week and I'll be doing what I can to control my stress and not let it get the best of me.
WORKOUT PLAN
Monday
AM: Easy run - Warm up walk, 2mi @ 14:34 per mi, cool down walk
Tuesday
AM: Easy run - Warm up walk, 4mi @ 14:48 per mi, cool down walk

Dopey Training Review - Week #40

MIND CHECK
Good thing this was a recovery week because it turned in to a nightmare in so many ways. Losing Ralph was the first stress that happened. My co-worker had to leave because his brother passed away - I watch his cats for him and I'm also his backup at work. Then we had major issues at work which required me to work 16-18 hour days Monday through Thursday. Needless to say - there was no time for me to workout this week. That's okay though, I'll pick it up again this week!
BODY CHECK
My left foot was a little bit sore after my 15 miles on Sunday. It worked its self out by Tuesday night which was good - amazing what some ice and rest time can do! Okay other than that.
NUTRITION
Oh the joys of stress eating. If it was bad, I ate it this week. No excuses - I was just horrible, period!
WORKOUT PLAN
Monday
AM: Walk - 2mi @ no target
Decided to rest. Had to take care of Ralph this morning. Had a server drive replacement to do for work, then ended up having to work until 10pm on other issues.
Tuesday
AM: Easy run - 4mi @ 14:48 per mi
Another long day at work - 6:30am to 9pm. I feel like I have no life right now. Things are just a mess.
Wednesday
REST
Another long and horrible day at work. 6:30am - 11pm...Awful stressed right now. Want to get some miles in, but there hasn't been time or energy to do it.
Thursday
AM: Easy run - 4mi @ 14:48 per mi
Workout - what is that. Another 6:30am - 12am day at work. I'm so tired I can barely function.
Friday
AM: Bike - 20mi no target
You'd think I'd be able to get a bike ride in, but honestly, I fell asleep on the couch tonight.
Saturday
AM: Easy Run - 4mi @ 14:48 per mi
Still so tired and just have no motivation. I know that's a lame excuse, but I am beat.
Sunday
REST
AM: Walk 4.02mi @ 16:51
Took the dogs out for a walk this morning. I have to say that the first mile or so I felt like I was walking on broken legs. Everything is stiff and sore and out of shape today. Once I got in to the walk I was feeling okay.

That's a wrap for this week. Be on the lookout for the Dopey Training Preview post for next week's plan!

Rest in Peace Ralph (My Little Man)

Ralph

Today marks another sad day for me as my oldest (and littlest) dog Ralph passed away tonight. It was nothing more than old age, but that doesn't make it any easier.

My journey with Ralph started over sixteen years ago. I was working at the Mesa YMCA and we had worked through the night and were back in the office several hours later. I left the office early on April 1st and as we were driving home a little dog had five lanes of traffic stopped dead.

My Mom asked if I wanted to try to get him and I said I couldn't leave him in the road to get hit. Mind you there were three or four other people trying to get him as well. I got out of the car and chased him around a van and when he got to the sidewalk, he stopped and let me pick him up.

We were living in an apartment at the time and were in no position to have a dog, but here he was this little fur ball. Matted fur down to the ground, covering his little eyes. If you wanted Loony Tunes you might remember the sheepdogs that watched the sheep with Wiley Coyote tried to take them. In one of the cartoons, two sheepdogs were punching in/out and one says, "Night Fred." and the other says, "Night Ralph." and that's how Ralph got his name.

I had every intention of taking him to the Humane Society or the Pound, but when I called they said he would only be given three days and if he wasn't adopted he'd be put down. I couldn't subject a sweet little puppy like this to death for something that wasn't his fault.

So, Ralph became mine. He was a Shih Tzu/Terrier mix and about 4 months old when I got him. He was a runner and always trying to escape, it took years to break him of this habit and honestly, he just wasn't given a lot of opportunities to choose to come or run.

He was a very sweet little dog, never yippie, but he had a big dog attitude for sure. He would attack any dog that he saw - he may have only been nine pounds, but he'd take on a 100 pound dog without even thinking. With people though - he was a love, he would lean in to you and basically just give you hugs.

I hope that he is at peace now and knows how much he will be missed and I hope somewhere he is playing tug-o-war with his brother BJ (BJ passed away over 4 years ago)!

Dopey Training Preview - Week #40

MIND CHECK
This week I get to do some recovery for all the miles last week. I mean, seriously, I did over half of the Dopey Challenge! In three days I put in 27.54 miles on my feet - the Dopey is 42.40...I feel like I'm on my way and if I can keep it up I'll be okay!
BODY CHECK
Dealing with some allergies, blisters and sore joints, but nothing too bad right now and I'd like to keep it this way!!!
NUTRITION
Will do what I can here. I'm not going to make any promises. I can only promise to try.
WORKOUT PLAN
Monday
AM: Walk - 2mi @ no target
Tuesday
AM: Easy run - 4mi @ 14:48 per mi
Wednesday
REST
Thursday
AM: Easy run - 4mi @ 14:48 per mi
Friday
AM: Bike - 20mi no target
Saturday
AM: Easy Run - 4mi @ 14:48 per mi
Sunday
REST

Dopey Training Review - Week #39

MIND CHECK
What can I say about this week...I'm doing my best to get the miles in on my feet and still to my plans at least in terms of getting my feet worn out :). It hasn't been an easy week - work is crazy (nothing new there) and my oldest little dog Ralph is ready to let go (he has stopped eating and is barely drinking - he is 17). There's been quite a bit of stress, but I've managed to try to workout through it.
BODY CHECK
I was over the cold by the middle of the week and moved right to allergies...but I can handle that and I do feel better, but still having some coughing here and there. The right knee is holding up okay, lots of Bio Freeze and ice are wonderful! The blisters on my feet caused me some major trouble this week...The skin on the left heel ripped and left a lot of tender skin that developed a new blister that popped...pretty bad for a couple of days, but better in time to workout this weekend!
NUTRITION
I have failed completely here. I've done nothing but eat badly this week. I have been craving pasta and have worked very hard to fulfill those cravings. I know, I know - I must do better here. I keep trying, but probably need to try even harder.
WORKOUT PLAN
Monday
AM: Bike - 15mi @ no target
PM: Bike - 15mi, 1hr 4mins, 14.2 mi per hr, resistance level 2
Still not feeling great, coughing, etc...Regardless, I managed to get my bike ride in and I think I'm coughing less but feel a little nauseous tonight. My knee held up okay through the bike ride which was good.
Tuesday
AM: Easy run - 4mi @ 14:48 per mi
PM: Treadmill walk -4.04mi, .48mi warm up walk, 2.36mi @ 16:14 per mi, 1.19mi cool down walk
Starting to feel better today, but man my legs felt dead tonight. The treadmill was not my friend, but at least I go some miles in today.
Wednesday
AM: Walk - 3mi no target
AM: Walk 3.18mi @ 15:59 per mi
Took the girls out for a walk this morning. Felt pretty good, but I've got blisters forming on my left foot again. Really need to figure out why that is happening so much now when I walk. Have to keep trying things until I figure it out I guess.
Thursday
AM: Easy run - 4mi @ 14:48 per mi
Well, the skin on the blister on my left heel is gone and left nothing but raw new skin. I could barely walk today because it hurt so bad. Wrapped things up to help protect and aired at night to make it feel better.
Friday
AM: Walk - 4mi no target
PM: Treadmill walk - 4.19mi @ 17:54 per mi
My left heel still hurts, but I managed to walk on it today. This weekend holds some challenges and I can't wait to see if I can do it.
Saturday
AM: Long Run - 15mi @ 16:00 - 18:00 per mi
PM: Treadmill long run - 7.64mi, .36mi warm up walk, 7mi @ 17:45 per mi, .28mi cool down walk
Ralph is still hanging in and I don't feel like leaving him alone much. I can't make him better, but I don't want him alone...This stressed me out most of the day, so I really just napped on the couch and didn't do much, but at 7pm I drug myself off the couch and did my 7 miles on the treadmill. Decided to try 1min run/1min walk intervals today and I managed to do the full 7 miles this way. I stopped once at 4.75mi to get a drink of water, but other than that I was good to go. While I wasn't fast, it felt good to be able to do some run time and feel okay at the end of the mileage. Tomorrow I will try for 15mi!
Sunday
REST
AM: Treadmill long walk - 15.71mi, .25mi warm up walk, 15mi @ 17:19 per mi, .45mi cool down walk
Holy cow - I just spend 4hrs 35mins on a treadmill and did my longest walk ever. Yes, this is my longest distance ever at one time! All this after 7 miles last night...I'm feeling pretty good about this mentally. Physically, my legs are tired, my feet sore and my hips are tight. I'm sure I'll be feeling this tomorrow, but I just did a little over half of the Dopey this weekend and I feel like this is a great start to the last few months of training for the Dopey!

That's a wrap for this week. Be on the lookout for the Dopey Training Preview post for next week's plan!

A Little Inspiration

I think I've mentioned my co-worker that does triathlons previously. The man is an animal - he puts in some major training time while working full time and being very supportive of his wife and two kids. I admire him greatly as I don't have near as much to deal with and he still manages to stay dedicated and on track.

We were talking on Friday and I learned something that made my admiration for him go through the roof. I found out that he does all this stuff and he has MS. Yes, that's right - he's shooting for Kona and he has MS.

He was diagnosed 28 years ago while in college. At the time he was diagnosed he was on the college wrestling team and very active. He went numb on one entire side of his body. He had to drag his leg behind him. It was extremely difficult and at the time the medications weren't as good as they are now.

If you saw him today you would never know that he has MS. He trains fiercely and runs an 8 - 9 minute per mile pace - not to mention his swimming and biking!

I am so glad that the medications have improved to the point that he is able to do what he does now. Medications only work so well though. He's struggling a bit right now as some days he still can't train at all. He was telling me that some days he can go out and do an 18 mile run without a care in the world, very little pain and feeling great. He just did a 13 mile run maintaining 8 minute per mile pace the whole way. Then he has days were he can't even walk to the mailbox.

I have made a lot of excuses this year and have been way too lazy. This man's story has reminded me once again that the aches and pains that I feel are nothing and that I need to do everything I can. Why? BECAUSE I CAN! It really helped me to put things back in to perspective and made me realize just how lucky I am.

So, the next time I give you all an excuse on why I didn't do something - please remind me that I'm being selfish and lazy and that no excuse is good enough when you have the ability to get out there and do it!

Just to give you an idea of his level (while competing with an injured Achilles and not having been able to train for an entire week) here are the results from an Olympic Distance Triathlon he completed yesterday:
Swim: 25:28
Bike: 1:32:46
Run: 54:20
Total Time: 2:52:40

Dopey Training Preview - Week #39

MIND CHECK
12 weeks - that's it...That's all the time I have left to get myself ready for the Dopey Challenge...Where has this year gone and why have I waited so long to get myself on the right track. Well, I'm there now, I know I cannot make any more excuses and I need to get the time on my feet. So, that's what I'm going to do.
BODY CHECK
I am still sick, I am still coughing and having a rough time breathing. That being said, I am still feeling better than last week and am sure I'll continue to improve. My right knee is still a bit sore and I'm going to baby it a bit until it feels better. Other than that, I have nothing holding me back and that's the way it has to be!
NUTRITION
I know that I need to continue to improve in this area and I will do my best to do so. It will be a challenge of course, but there's really no option - it has to be done!
WORKOUT PLAN
Monday
AM: Bike - 15mi @ no target
Tuesday
AM: Easy run - 4mi @ 14:48 per mi
Wednesday
AM: Walk - 3mi no target
Thursday
AM: Easy run - 4mi @ 14:48 per mi
Friday
AM: Walk - 4mi no target
Saturday
AM: Long Run - 15mi @ 16:00 - 18:00 per mi
Sunday

That's a wrap for this week. Be on the lookout for the Dopey Training Review post at the end of the week!

Dopey Training Review - Week #38

MIND CHECK
The beginning of the week I was still in Walt Disney World. The end of the week brought a super bad cold - bad enough that I had to work from home a couple of days. The middle of the week brought a very interesting travel day and I'll go in to detail during my trip report (hoping to post soon).
BODY CHECK
The right knee is still pretty tender and sore at times, but I can still walk through it pretty easily. I may have to wear my brace while run/walking for a while to strengthen it up. Everything else feels pretty good!
NUTRITION
This has been a very bad week in terms of eating. I haven't done one thing good in terms of food. The scale is not going to be my friend this next week. Must refocus in this area.
WORKOUT PLAN
Monday
Spent the day in Epcot walking around World Showcase. Did some good power walking from the Ticket and Transportation Center to the Magic Kingdom and return.
Tuesday
Travel day. Other than sitting on planes for way too long and a little airport walking it was a sedentary day!
Wednesday
Sick...Can't breathe, fever, coughing and feeling terrible.
Thursday
Sick...Still can't breathe, fever, coughing and feeling terrible.
Friday
Back to work, but still not up to working out.
Saturday
AM: Walk - 4.03mi @ 17:21 per mi
Took the dogs out for a nice walk this morning. Still having coughing attacks and trouble breathing, but at least I got some time on the feet and the weather was gorgeous!
Sunday
AM: Komen 5K Walk
AM: Komen 5K - 3.21mi @ 17:15 per mi
Walked the Komen 5K this morning with a friend. She is having trouble with her shoes and since I'm still coughing and having trouble breathing we just took it nice and slow and enjoyed the day.

That's a wrap for this week. Be on the lookout for the Dopey Training Preview post for next week's plan!

Dopey Training Review - Week #37

MIND CHECK
I had a great time at Walt Disney World with some great friends and fun events. I will be posting a trip report at some point soon. I just need to gather all my stuff together and start writing :)!
BODY CHECK
Overall I did okay. I had some knee issues after the 5K that carried in to the half marathon, but I worked through them. The half marathon brought a new challenge of stomach cramps through over half of the race...More on that in the trip report.
NUTRITION
Ugh - there was nothing good about my nutrition during this trip. I just didn't do a good job eating right.
WORKOUT PLAN
Monday
AM: Bike - 15mi @ no target
No workout. Between work and trying to get ready for the trip I stayed plenty busy without trying to get a workout in.
Tuesday
AM: Easy run - 4mi @ 14:22 per mi
Again no workout.
Wednesday
AM: Walk - 4mi no target
Ah, the day for a trip always keeps me busy with yard work, packing and house cleaning!
Thursday
REST - Travel to WDW
Had an okay travel day to Orlando. It took me a while to get in to the resort and unfortunately I had to do a fair amount of work which kept me busy far too long.
Friday
REST
I really wanted to get a nice 5K run in, but staying up until 1:30am and traveling all day the day before wore me out...I know, excuses, excuses. You're right, I was just lazy!
Saturday
AM: Halloween 5K
AM: Mickey's Halloween 5K - 3.18mi @ 14:43 per mi
This was an enjoyable race. The coolest thing as far as I'm concerned was the grave digger out on the course - people were laying down on the grass and taking pictures and it was pretty cool. I am still a bit surprised that a family fun run included the Contemporary hill going both ways, but it did make for a nice challenge - or pain depending on how you look at it :)!
PM: Wine & Dine Half Marathon
PM: Wine & Dine Half Marathon - 13.38mi @ 15:19 per mi
Live and learn on this one. I was feeling great through 5.5 miles when all of a sudden my stomach began cramping terribly and continued to do so for the rest of the race. I now realize that I didn't fuel properly for this race...More on this in my trip report to come later.
Sunday
REST
Yep, it was a rest day - unless you count Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party :)! Except for some pain in my right knee I felt pretty good in terms of pain management.

That's a wrap for this week. Be on the lookout for the Dopey Training Review post for the wrap up of how the following week went!
